My Fiesta has a few rust scabs starting to come through on the rear arch and the driver's door. What's the best stuff to treat it and stop it spreading? My late father-in-law gave me something for my old Mk1 that worked really well, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was called.

No, it wasn't that. It had one of those kinda futuristic names, like 'Rust-o-Zap' or 'Korroda-Kil', but it wasn't Kurust. You dabbed it on with a stiff brush, and it dried to a light green-y colour, then you could paint over it. Thinking about it, it might have been an Amway product, becasuse the brother-in-law was well into that...

I've been using Dinitrol Converust over the last few years. Dries to a black or deep purple colour. Seems to be doing pretty well on some of my older repairs. I've got an aerosol can but think you get it in a brush on variety.

I've used metal ready from frosts to good effect in the past. These days I clean the rust out thoroughly and use electrox primer before paint, I did my midget 3 years ago and not a spot has come back through.

Most kurust type stuff is based on Phosphoric acid.
Go to your local farm supplies shop and get a gallon of "Milkstone remover" which is basically 40% phosphoric acid and costs circa £13
You can paint it on, or wipe on with a rag. Or put it in a Mr Muscle sprayer. Dilute it and use as an acid bath (It's a lot less aggressive than other acids, and even use it as an etchant on bear metal.)
I use it all the time - and a gallon usually lasts me about 3 years
