I've come across this looking for something else but haven't found much about it other than its a "Alpina E21 Record Car" from 1981 and you can buy a diecast model of it.... Any of our regular E21ers know anything?

I seem to remember reading that the front end was modelled on this: Thanks you very much - I'm here all week...

Porsche 924 - gone Citroen Saxo VTR - not very retro but I loved it - now gone... MK4 Golf GTi 1.8T - gone but hardly remembered... Mini Cooper S R53 - gone BMW 125d Coupe - gone (mostly sideways)
Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

It was done for economy IIRC. Not BMW's best look...

It looks as if someone who had once read a description of a superbird/charger daytona tried to describe the look to the person who was preoccupied when he relayed the information to the designer.
It does look like something you would see over at ecomodder.

The photo is from Auto Motor und Sport issue 15 July 1981; from the cover story "Savings Day". Every year the petroleum company Shell staged the "mileage marathon" event. And in 1981 Alpina together with staff from AMuS took part, fielding this special 318i, which competed and won in Class III (unladen weight 1000 to 1300 kg) with a fuel consumption of 2.672 litres per 100 km (can't think of the imperial amount of the top of my head, but it was economical). The rules stipulated in this case that the participating cars, had to do six laps on the of the (old) Hockenheim race circuit while having a minimum speed of 50 kph. Extensive changes are made to the cars as can be seen easily from the photo. No changes were allowed to the standard body structure, although doors bonnet, boot could be modified. The engine block, crank, conrods gearbox casing and final drive had to remain factory standard. Alpina effectively made the M10 a more fuel-efficient two-cylinder, modifying the induction system so that two of the pistons did not receive a fuel supply or spark but still reciprocated as that what the rules required. Further changes were made to the ignition and cooling systems in the name of fuel economy. To decrease friction losses on the final drive, the drive shaft to the right rear wheel was removed. That new front snout (good for a CD of .30) caused a corresponding aerodynamic wave in class IV ( unladen weight over 1400 kg) with an Alpina 528i, which was prepared similarly prepared and with fuel consumption of 2.92 litres per 100 km was only beaten - maybe unfairly - by a Mercedes-Benz 200 Diesel, with a fuel consumption figure of 2.871 litres per 100km.

uuuuglyyy! Does anyone know any more details about the "modifying the induction system so that two of the pistons did not receive a fuel supply or spark but still reciprocated as that what the rules required" bit? It's amazing really that this works, when you consider the fact that the 2 'disabled' cylinders add to the frictional losses but don't contribute any power. Using this calculator www.eforecourt.com/l_100km_mpg_convert.htmThat 2.672l/100km figure translates to about 105mpg !

Q. Is it wrong that I want to build a replica nose to put on my E21? A. Of course it isn't. Turn up at a show with it - with a 210bhp 2.7 in place of the 2pot M10...
