In my experience the 260 I6 doesn't do 30mpg, more like 23-26 - that's with a mixture of town & motorway driving, with the ocasional blast BUT in a smaller lighter car (W201) Bloody awesome engine tho, mine came out (for a M104 3.2) at ~299700 miles but with a set of rings would've kept on going & going.. Rolling roaded at 30bhp down on stock after all those miles, with low comp. on 1 cylinder.. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

Cheers for the feedback... 25 mpg on gas is about 45 mpg on petrol if you see my thinking. Hmmm. Thats crappy modern MPG on a proper old barge though. Not sure if it fullfills the "pays for itself in no time" brief... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I'm voting no on this one Akku, this car won't make you happy. agreed. Plus if you want sub 1k german you can get a nice audi A8 4.2 V8 - saw an lpg converted one sell for just over that a few weeks back (1195 iirc) just down the road from me...

The thing with the 260 is - it loves to rev it's tits off... Hence you'll be on the floor with the throttle quit often ;D It's a bit like a jet turbine ;D
The colour combination is damn sexy, though. Red leather/MB Tex is quite rare too...
Hmmm - I've made my first burnout with a 260E ;D

Pre-91 helps with my insurance but the A8/LPG combo could be tempting... Assuming thats the 4wd one?

yup was a quattro jobbie. really great cars for the money, and LPG makes them a lot cheaper to run!
I'm not too clued up on my pre 91 barges unfortunately as i like my little tin cans/rice rockets, but I'll keep an eye out for anything interesting

I wouldn't - I had the same engine in my old 190e, the best I ever managed was around 26mpg on a steady run, closer to 20 round town and that's a much lighter car...

I'm assuming that 91 is the cut off for classic insurance? If so that opens a few doors for me car wize

Nope....it depends on the car. My 1993 Eunos is classed as a classic and is currently insured under a classic policy. As a counterpoint, I tried to get a quote on a 1987 Carlton a few months back and was told it wasn't a classic (I didn't think it was either) so would have to go under a 'normal' car policy until it's 30 years old. What I am trying to say is that 'Classic' policy is entirely down to the type of car and the criteria of each individual insurer. Don't just assume that a car 20 years old will be eligible for a classic policy. Most might, but it's not a guarantee. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

depends on insurer. My insurer classes anything as over 20 years as a classic and anything under 20 as modern.
I could insure my '87 Trans Am as a classic but I looked at a '91 model of the same car and as it was 19 years old at the time, no dice. To add the '87 Trans Am to my policy was an admin fee, to add the '91 would have been £480 or so, plus would have to be restricted to 3000 miles.
My Trans Am costs the same to insure as my Corolla '85 1.3 did.

This is all very usefull information for me at the moment.
As I need a bigger car and fairly quickly now that ive sold the DAF but to be affordable it must be suitable for classic insurance. The downside of only ever having insured classic cars is that despite 4 years of accident free motoring I have no no claims.
p.s. The green DAF is moving down your neck of the woods and will be a daily driver so you should see it about.

Contact your insurers. Explain your predicament. When I was with Footman James they gave me 6 years NCB onto a modern policy even though I technically wasn't entitled to it. Proper insurers do stuff like that.
Also I am over 25 so I get the better policies - I can't recall how old you are but there are restrictions on age of driver too.

Proper insurers do stuff like that. Like make you wait 6 months for a payout.....and knock you down on the price at the last moment....I really hate Footman James.....Grrr.... back O/T; somebody stop him!
