Hi guys. My 1992 toyota hiace super custom has died. We think the head gasket has gone but not had a chance to look yet. What do you think would be best. Sell it as is or scrap it and see what I get. Weights 2040 kg. Will put some pics up.Thanks for reading. i975.photobucket.com/albums/ae233/supercustom24/002-Copy.jpg.

Is it Diesel and if so has it got the same engine the Surfs have? they can suffer from nasty head problems that often appear to be the head gasket.

[beatentoitbyVolksangyl] Damn....too slow [/beatentoitbyVolksangyl] There ya go.... I reckon it's got to be worth more selling it on to someone than it would be scrapping it. 2 tons will net you around £280 to £300 unless the scrap prices have shot up recently so I reckon you'll get more than that selling it as a whole. Possibly more hassle from 'prospective' buyers though? Have you got no chance of fixing it? Would be worth a lot more as a seller if it was running. (but then I guess you wouldn't be thinking of selling/scrapping if it was all working)

Thanks for the pics guys. It's a 2.4 td. Has a bit of a scrape down the n/side. Need to get some cash as the missus mondeo is getting a bit ropey. Don't want to sell it but can't see me doing anything with for a while.

Head may well be borked if the 2.4 is the same as the Surf engine, they are known to crack and secondhand good ones are hard to find at sensible money because of it. I guess it depends on how much you like the van, if it was mine I would probably take the oppertunity to swop out the engine for a 3 litre TD from a later surf, that will make it shift pretty well.

depends what you need back from it financially, but I hate selling cars (only ever sold 1 in my life) so itend to weigh them in when ive finished with them, (never lost money on a car yet!!)
Worth bearing in mind, that if you list it on ebay as being broken, with a auction for a wheel nut etc, then you will almost certainly sell a few quids worth of spares, typically £50ish or there abouts, the wheels and tyres could either be weighed in seperately, or sold, for a few more quid. Has it got a cat? i know they werent needed in 92, but a lot will have had them, cut this off and weigh it in seperately, another £40-50. Whats that make it? ~£350-400? Whats it realistically gonna make as is? (ive no idea at all.....) if the extra its worth isnt significant (£100-200), then i'd weigh it in, the scrappys wont care whether its been washed, or kick the tyres etc, and they wont not turn up for viewing and waste your time.......
Just my veiw, but like i say, i hate selling cars, so its slightly (very) biased!!

I'd say it's a case of time vs money.
Which one is more important to you?
If you need it gone soon and want to free up some cash, the scrapping is your safest bet, as you could suffer from having no bites at the Spares/Repairs ad, and have to endure possible timewasters.
If getting the maximum return is more important and the van doesn't need to be moved for a while, I'd go down the advertising it complete route.

scrap value + the wheels and tyres really, same as anything else broken of that age that is a difficult/pricey fix.

its possibly they use a hilux axle i guess, LSD and 3 litre TD would get it sliding really well, our surf is always spinning the tyres without much effort.
