The Volvo is a comfy car and the 1.8 gives what I would say is adequate performance. The 2.0 is a much better engine for no loss of MPG (less so when carrying weight too). Only thing is I reckon taking valium would have been more exciting than driving than the V40 (First was a 2000 1.8 SE, second was a 2000 2.0 SE). It was based on the Mitsubishi Carisma.
Early V40s were meant to be troublesome but the two I used never really had a fault at all, and collectively they covered around 150k in our hands.
I was going to suggest a 740 TD on your budget, but the petrol ones may cost you on MPG (the 2.3 GLE Auto I had did 30-35MPG), although insurance on all bar maybe the V6 cars are cheap.

Yeah i reckon both of them will be pretty dull cars. I can normally overcome that by listening to copious amounts of thrash metal while driving ;D The 2.0 woulbe be a nice upgrade but it really pushed the insurance price out of my reach. All the cars i got quotes on bar the 'Scort and the V40 were TD engines and they were all significantly more expensive to insure, quite annoying really.

Bargain !
I ran an S reg S40 1.6 and an R reg V40 1.8 last year. The S40 had 80k on it, the V40 155k. Despite the mileage differences the V40 1.8 was the stronger car, fantastic engine and I only paid £400 for it, which I thought was a bloody good price. You sir, have got a bargain there!

Good choice and thats for pretty much nothing realistically,it'll do £150 in scrap when your finished with it. It's a much better car than the mk6 escort, they were rotting after 3 years old which shouldn't be a problem with your Volvo. How about a nice t4/5 conversion in the future!!!!

Yeah it is a good price, i hope the seller doesn't kick up a fuss. Don't forget the banded steels to go with the T5 engine ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
