I used to drive a Xantia as it was used as a workhorse at a place i used to work. Really nice car and was an absolute beast on the motorway ;D Not sure i'll be able to find one for under £500 though. I also didn't realise the V40's could be had that cheap, i'll have an ask with my insurance company tonight to see if the price goes up too drastically

tinyurl.com/3l43lfg![](http://pictures2.autotrader.co.uk/imgser-uk/servlet/media?id=1778583497) Voila! 1.5 for the cheap tax bracket as well! Fantastic engine that will happily do twice the mileage! Curses, just seen that it is a Cat C. Not sure if that is an issue for you as long as it has passed the VIC check? Rysz.

Skoda Felicia (all engines); Gutless 1.3 is fine, 1.6 no faster and 1.9 gutless. 1.3 is underpowered in that it has no torque and it's a small engine for such a medium sized car - but it is good. I raced a Merc SLK with a Favorit 1.3 (ahem) and it couldn't get away - and many other similar stories. I really would recommend one very highly for your circumstances, and they're very easy to improve (4x100, cheap lowering springs...)Peugeot 406 diesel; Expensive to buy Not necessarily. I was offered a Tested 406 recently for £200E36 318; nice car but well out of my price range. Got to disagree. £400 should find you a decent one with highish miles (which they're more than capable of)a bit of fixing, just like you asked! edit: Civic wagon is fantastic idea. Forgot about those. Seem to be holding steady at £450-650 at the minute.

I'll reconsider the Skoda on your recommendation and if theres one for sale near me i'll take it for a test drive. If i can find a 406 diesel for less than my budget i'll be biting the sellers arm off as it's a hell of a lot of car for the money. No disagreement here about the mileage the E36 is capable of. I'll keep them on the list for now and see if any catch my eye. Thanks ;D

I wouldn't dismiss the 308 out of hand. Except maybe the 1.4 ;D I drive a 1.6, 70mph is about 3200rpm in 5th, fuel consumption is currently better than the 1.1 Rover Metro it replaced by virtue of not having to flog it so hard. 132k on the clock and the only problem in 7 months of ownership is the (standard) leaky sunroof. Mine's a hatch so I would imagine the estate's performance might be a bit different, but probably still repectable. 1.4l is probably a bit too small but the 1.6 has certainly proved enough for me to have fun on the lanes around here ;D

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I'm spending the rest of the week looking for cars on the list that are local to me and i can have a look at them over the weekend. Hopefully it will help me come to some sort of decision.

Not sure if I would prefer a 406 or a Xantia though ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) I've had several of both, the 406 has slightly better handling and the Xantia is slightly more comfortable. Other than that there isn't much in it, the 406 interior is slightly more modern but Xantia seats are better. Its very much swings and roundabouts IMO. I've also had a Citroen C5 which is very much along the same lines and they are cheap now.

Is a Citroen Berlingo/ Peugeot Partner not something to look for? I used to drive a Berlingo at an old job and i hated it with every fibre of my body. I was so happy the day the rad burst and i killed it once and for all ;D
