It pains my to say it but my beloved Mk2 GTI is going to be going for spares in the not too distant future. So, the very least I owe it for years of amazing service is a Retro Rides thread! I bought it on eBay a few years back. It was a '90 spec GTI 8v with a couple of subtle mods: After replacing the clutch and heater matrix she drove like a dream and stayed this way for some time. I was never a fan of the Fox Racing alloys so sold these and replaced them with some 15" BBS from an old E30 BMW. Once fitted with some lower profile rubber, thses looked the absolute don! With a friend who worked as a vinyl signwriter I managed to get hold of some white sheet at a very reasonable cost and spent an evening checking the roof - wasn't a perfect job by any means but it looked pretty cool nevertheless: I always loved the small bumper look compared to the '90 spec so with a combinaation of bits in my garage and more ebay finds I set about pulling off the 90 spec arches and bumpers and replacing them with small GTI items and an early 16v front splitter: And to add to the rat vibe of the roof I salt washed a spare bonnet: To be continued.....

Looks nice. I have owned a few mk2's and love the 8v. Why break it?

Very nice, massive mk2 fan myself. (not a fan of the bonnet though, sorry).
As above, why break it?

Always been a lover of the Mk2, especially the 8v; just seems to have the power in a much more useable place compared to the 16v!
Well, the bonnet was sold to raise a bit of cash so that went back to black...

Anyway, on with the tale: More through boredom than anything else I thought I'd have a go at re-furbing the wheels and spraying them a lairy colour at the same time (yes, bit of a scene sheep for doing that... sorry) Cleaning: Priming: Paint: And rolled into daylight: The wheels were finish in luminus yellow which looked pretty cool when it was applied; glowed under UV and everything! Unfortunately when I laquered them they ended up more of a green colour. Still, confused the hell out of the neighbours!

When removing the 90 spec kit I made some unfortunate discoveries (as is always the case when removing arches on a mk2 golf)... The main offender was the nearside rear arch... A real bodge job had been done to repair it, managed to pull a large lump of filler away with my bare hands exposing some very badly aligned red bodywork behind... It really is the nastiest weld/skim/fill job i've seen in quite some time... Still, ever the optemist and following a trip to Edition 38 (2009) I got my hands on a pair of weld in rear arch panels, ready for fitting either the day I felt flush enough or the day I discovered a fully equipped workshop located in my house; whichever came first really. Months passed and I convinced myself that the repair works would be happening soon when I came home to discover than my car had been clouted whilst my girlfriend had left it parked outside her dad's house. Some d1ckless, w@nksh1te tw@ crashed into it and (of course) not stopped, left a note or anything. The police obviously couldn't give a tiny rats ass about a hit and run on a car that looks like it's worth less than my trainers all the insurance would have done is written it off and lost me my no claims. In the end, it was only a small dent, I managed to bang the worst of it out and straighten the rear bumper leaving me with this:

Anyway, back in February I had to take it off the road to save some cash and it's been parked up since then... To answer the questions as to why I'm breaking it: Well, to be honest, if I had somewhere to store it in the dry I would definitely hang onto it, fix it up over time.
After sitting for 8 months it's starting to look a little sorry for itself; the paint has cracked and perished on the nearside, the smaller rust holes are getting bigger, the vinyl is peeling on the roof, the interior is tatty, the engine (although still pulling like a train) has done well over 214k... There's just too many little things wrong with it to make it sellable for a reasonable price (compared to what I could get for some of the parts and weighing in whats left).
I'm open to suggestions (or offers of free lock up space in the East Kent area) but with my E30 project ongoing I just don't have the room

Good news! Sold my golf today to the guys at PowerSpeed in Ashford. There it is looking to get a strip down and rebuild, cage and then will be coming to a race track near you... Can't think of a more fitting final destination for it! Bye bye Golf! We've had some good times!

Glad to hear it wasn't wasted. I completely understand your reasons for breaking it, but at the end of the day another retro saved is always a good thing.
