hi there i have a 1 litre corsa reg s134 wbc . what happens is engine light comes on ( orange on dash ) . car struggles , i change down gear say from fith to forth , it clears eventually , i bang back onto fith and soo as owt light on again and its struggling
my question , could it be the maf , or egr if so how easy to change myself or is it a garage job .
i got quite a few tools and I'm somewhat handy , also which is the right sensors for my car ?
anyhelp would be great
many thanks

thats great , my light only comes on whilst driving does this matter ? and only at around 55 to 70 mph , then turns on and off once gear changed occurs and the issue explained previous . (if that makes sence )
guess I'm really asking , can i read a fault even though the light isnt on ?
thanks richard

If the light is on for more than 30 seconds, it's logged in the ECU. Be careful though, it will show a problem with either the crank/cam sensor because the engine isn't running. I kept ignoring this on mine and it turned out I had a problem with both

so I'm better off just swopping out maf and egr , covering both bases as it were

Probably the ERG sticking. Just had to bypass the ERG on my mates Astra. Coke can, scissors and 15mins and it was sorted

Look at the airbox, and follow the hose back to the engine. Part way along there, there will be a wire. That's the maf. It's similar to this.

Only swap out the MAF if that's the problem. It's an expensive part. Could be the Lambda sensor, doesn't sound like the usual ones.

thank you , will see tomorrow . all the best . if it is lambda , ive done a couple before on other cars , does the corsa have 2 ?
one near head and one on exhaust somewhere ?
are they both easy to get too ? ive done one on a ka, skoda , suzuki wagon , all very tight but managed it

To save a lot of grief you would be better off taking to a garage and coughing up to have the codes read. Most places charge between 30 and 40 notes, i do it for 25. Get them to print out the codes that are stored then clear them and see what ones come back. That way you will save a lot of time and money chasing faults that might have stored in the ecu for years.

On that age Vauxhall, disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes clears the codes, and doesn't cost a penny.

On that age Vauxhall, disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes clears the codes, and doesn't cost a penny. and all youve done is exactly that cured nothing.just have it plugged in its £20 at my place or just change everything on the car ie every sensor and then when it still comes back on after a good few quid on mafs and egrs then go and have it plugged in guessing isnt the best route or if thats what we are doing i say its the near side rear wheel cylinder

Blimey its cheap up north. Not heard of a garage round here charging less than £35. Which personaly i think is disgusting for some apprentice to spend 5 minutes plugging in a solus.

Why spend money on having it plugged into the magical machine when the paper clip test does the exact same thing? Ive being doing it on my vauxhalls for the last 15 years and its always spot on. Dissconect the battery for 10 mins so you loose any old fault codes it could have being storing. Then take it for a run so the eml comes on afew times. Then do the paperclip test.Put the clip in,then turn the ignition on.Count the flashes.See what the number comes up as on toppbuzz and your sorted.

paperclip test doesnt work on 1.0 corsas, and they only like certain scanners, usually the dearer ones. and on these its 1 hr to wipe the current codes from the ecu, but it doesnt clear history codes. best bet is as said get it read and cleared at a garage.

Also the 'paperclip test' will only access a very limited number of fault codes. It will tell you for example there's a fault with the maf but it won't tell you if its signal or supply, range/performance related. Fault codes only give you a clue to the fault and I like to have as many clues as possible before I start throwing money away.
