For some reason i keep looking at Citroen H vans for sale lately. I know they're only LHD and the brakes are poor at best and they'll only do 100kph flat out...with a lail wind..down hill and the engines don't even have an oil filter. I can't help thinking that one with a GTi6 engine in the back and a transit back axle would be seriously cool...and some banded steels for added WIN, oh and painted up in Ambulance livery Anyone got any pics of any modified ones, i've only ever seen one in the flesh:

Ah, memories - I remember the bread van driving through the village every morning, bursting with pains rustiques and fresh croissants. And once a week, the meat van, offering all kinds of wholesome charcuterie. The H van: backbone of rural France. La Transit Francais. ;D

I absolutely love these.. The fact that they are a corrugated filo pastry monocoque really gives me a bit of fear though. I'm happy with a welder but my goodness, I bet it'd be horrible. I seem to remember there being some later diesel ones? I'd probably end up buying one of those in the assumption that it'd be better, more economical or more torquey and be sorely mistaken on all points

There's a mint H ice cream van on the South Bank, near the National Theatre. Quite a few minto classic vans selling ice creams or coffee up there now.

I have a '73 stashed in the barn which may well emerge sometime next year. Your right about top speed, but they corner at the same speed like a kart as the wheels are right into the corner. Knack is never to take your foot off the gas. Unusual bastards that arent that easy to work on, and near impossible to weld up,l because of the corrugations. Every Frog now knows their value so you're unlikely to find a cheap one.
Have you consider an Estafette? They're still cheap, and they come in a much greater variety of shapes/sizes..Simpler to work on,too!

The driving style is the same for most low powered Citroens, just don't lift off ;D I'm not looking to buy one, certainly not in the near future as i have no money or space to work on one, i just really want one. Can't say i've ever looked at Estafettes until you mentioned them. The van ones look bloody ugly but the truck ones look quite cool

Like the Rover v8 conversion, I was about to mention a DS 2.3 liter engine. But v8 power is so much cooler!

I love a good H van. Yes they have their flaws but Christ what they are about is great, especially for the time they were made . Hmmm, V8 H-Van...
