I've got a cast ally cam cover that has quite a smooth finish and I want to spray it (ideally) satin black or crackle finish black. I don't really want to roughen the surface prior to spraying as I've used some JB Weld on it which I've sanded and blended in. Can anyone recommend a tough and durable spray or paint that'll go straight on? Thanks in advance, Richard.

VHT do both black winkle and satin wrinkle paint. you'll need to key the surface for the paint to stick though. you might be better off using an etching primer first though. I'm using Bilt Hamber etchweld primer under VHT paint and it seems to be compatible. Ive also used the VHT paint on aluminium without etching primer too, but its easier to chip without the primer

Thanks - do you reckon Etchweld will go over JB weld though?

A few options. Lightly sand or scotchbrite, and clean/degrease. Light coat of etch primer, normal primer if you like, for a bit more 'fill', then colour. Or BBQ paint, for a nice satin finish that's durable. Have done bike engine parts inc cam covers with that, over primer. Can be a bit odd to spray, shake the can really well and warm it up (stand in warm water a few mins), lays down nicely then.

Just to be different I use etch primer then powder coat. Here's one I did nearly two years ago, it still looks the same. The spots you can see are droplets of water.
