so its high time the distributor points had a change so i do and nothing not even an attempt to start, i cleaned the contacts gave it a rough gap put it all back together (not forgetting the rotor arm) and nothing at all last time i had todo it i kept phoning so stupid garage who kept saying they couldnt do it till such and such in the end i went and bought a set and tryed it for myself couldnt get it to work so nicked the set out another fiesta it worked fine, the bought set needed a little bodgeing but still nothing so ive cleaned the old set and adjusted it at sevral gaps and still not a whisper any tips at all 1100 valencia engine with a bosche distributor

A rough cap isn't good enough really IHMO - it's gotta be dead close if you're going to get a whisper out of it.
Got the rotor on the right way around? Not sure about these dizzies, should be keyed so you can't do it.
Also make sure all the wiring is correct and you've got the clips etc in the right orientation - so easy to short something totally out!

ok so its just a case with play with different gaps till it fires then get someone who knows what thier doing to sort it out thanks for the advice

You got any feeler gauges? Find the book gap and set it Just turn the engine over by hand, by pushing, or by turning it on the starter until the cam lobe in the dizzy has the points full open then stick your feeler in, adjust the gap till it just slides in and out without too much resistance

The gap really needs to be set with feeler gauges to whatever it says in the shop manual. I know BMC engines will run happily enough over quite a wide gap range (though not exactly performing as they should) but maybe the Ford engine is more picky? If the new points have sat on the shelf for a while then the contact surface can oxidise slightly making it hard to get spark so it might be worth just rubbing them over with some very fine wet n dry. If you turn the ignition on with dizzy cap and rotor arm off and points in a closed position then using a plastic handled screwdriver to push the points open slightly you shoudl see a spark if all is well. Just had another thought if you're unfamiliar with points. Have you set the gap while the follower bit of the points is resting right on a peak of the dizzy shaft? If not then it'll be all wrong!

stupid thing worked with no gap!! hear the almight roar back into life and a little rattle from the distributor under full power, off to the motor factors for bittys for a service what should i add to my list plugs (HT leads were done last month) oil and filter dizzy cap rotor arm fan belt (not looking forward to changing that) points and condensor ill get someone in the know to sort them out for me oooh front brake pads need a change allready got the pads air filter

Well, you could buy a set of feeler gauges then you can set both the plug and points gaps right! Fan belt shouldn't be tricky to do. Just loosen off the alternator mounts so you can swing it towards the engine, remove old belt, fit new belt, pull alternator back out to tension belt and tighten up the mounts! Once done check that you can push the belt in by about 1" (25mm) midway along its longest length between pulleys. If its too tight you'll knacker the alternator bearings. Too loose and it'll slip. Or, cut the old belt in half leaving it in position, keeping everything in the same place, stretch new belt so it's almost on then just trim the last bit of the old'un off, finish sliding the new one on. S'what I usually do, anyway. Makes more sense when it's driving cams though ;D

oh no ive got about 3 sets of feeler gauges just havnt a clue about the points long as it runs witough coughing and misfiring and can idle I'm happy just thought the poor ol gal deserved a service had it over a year done an oil change a points change and a plugs change.........in well over 10K

come one man if you're going to do the points, and you own a set of feeler gauges but simply can't be bothered to use em, don't be too surprised that you're having problems. 4/10 SEE ME

Sounds like you set the points gap on the part of the lobe when they were supposed to be closed. Then when you spin the engine over they don't actually close. Easy mistake to make. Ford engines don't care what the points gap is, as long as there's a noticeable gap there when they open and they close fully it runs fine. Just make sure the gap you set is the same each time or it puts the timing out slightly.

ive heard the electronic ford dizz's off fez's can eat the little amplifier module quite often, your prob best off sticking with points, at least there cheap to replace! (our local breakers can charge £30 for the amplifier module alone!)
