Hey guys,
I've finally started with earnest on the Pantera.
I've been stripping paint down to bare metal with a heat gun and a scraper - not difficult as it appears to have had a Coddington resto in the past i.e the entire body is cocooned in Bondo.
Anyway, i've found 2 places - top of front wing and near the middle of the roof where I have large shallow dents that I can ping out, but as soon as I touch them, they ping back in again.
Anyone got any tips?

If the metal pops in and out, that means that it has been stretched. To fix this, I would guess that you need to shrink the whole panel, which requires some bodywork skills and I probably wouldn't recommend that you learn it on your Pantera!

You need a shrinking hammer and dolly, the face of the hammer looks like a hypno disc. Put the dolly on the back of the panel and beat the skin from the top against the dolly using it to buck the blows. You need to start from the middle and work in circles out towards the edge of the dent. It takes a fair bit of skill to get an even finish, I'd recommend getting a dent doctor if you've not panel beaten before.

Thanks for your input guys. I've taken your advice and done some googling. Turns out the accepted term for what I have is "Oil-canning"
The roof at least is in such god-awful state that I can't lose if I practice on it. I've got a pretty good idea of what is going on in the area now that I know what to look for.
