As you may have seen (or not you miserable buggers). the Saab has gone in the for sale section.
Time for a change. There are two distinct "New retro" cars on the horizon, one is a Celica GT4 ST185 that I'm going to see on Saturday.
The other is the car that I was seriously considering when I suggested the Saab was going a few weeks ago, a generation4 Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC (preferably a J import for the extra toys) from between 91(for the Japs)/92 and 96.
I have a number for one in Chester that I'm going to call if the Celica is no good/too pricey to insure. It's newer than the Celica, done about 49k less miles, has about as much history as the Celica, but it is a UK car not an import, so you get bog stock Aircon not Climate control, but it is about £400 less than the Celica.
Biggest problem with Preludes is most of the decent ones at reasonable prices is that they are Autos, when I want a manual.
It's nice red, with popup lights, a turbo and 4WD. Step back all you Skylines and Scoobs, the daddy is coming through (Signor Sainz won everything in one of these).

Both sound pretty good, those late late 80s onwards J muscle cars were beasts, rear wheel drive in both cases I assume?
And that should be senor Sainz, signor is Italian, Carlos Sainz is Spanish. ;D
Sorry. I wont do that again! ;D

I wont do that again! ;D The GT4 1990 model (all the GT4's were 4wd) is the middle model that Toyota made in 4WD configuration. The Prelude that I would be looking at would be a 91-93 because they are cheaper than the later slightly nicers ones, and a FWD, but 4WS, yes, 4 wheel steering. Nice huh. The ST185 will possibly have leather, can't remeber if it was standard, and we all know how nice Toyota sports seats are. The Prelude is unlikely to, half and full leather was very rare, but the standard cloth ones are made by Recarro. both models have aircon, and the import preludes had proper climate control.

I have to say that out of all the later generation J performance cars, Evo's, Sylines, Scooby, etc... the GT4 is the only one that has impressed me on track days. Even a stock one is quick round a track. I can catch and pass both Scooby's and Evo's in my 510 at Cadwell Park but not GT4's. I can keeppace with a stock one but not catch it up and a modified one, no way. Even modified Scoobs fall prey to the 510 at Cadwell. Skylines don't seem to be too hot on twisty tacks like Cadwell so you rarely see them there. I think the GT4 is a top choice from a performance standpoint but sadly they ain't too pretty

no offence....but you cant really call either of them a muscle car..... they're J cars...and they arent even RWD. GT4 is sposed to be fun though.

With early 90's cars starting to become as retro as the 70's and 80's ones, it strikes me as just perfect. As standard, it has more power, is shorter, and less weight (even with 4wd) than the Saab, yet strangley should be about the same or less on insurance, and better specced inside, and has 4wd just to hang in there a bit longer. I really hope it is a good one, as good as the advert says. Just need to get my Mike Brewer head on, and screw him down a couple of hundred "For cash, right now, go, you know you would be stupid to let me walk away".

BTW, for those not in the know, it's one of these. Actually that is the Carlos Sainz edition very nice one, It's actualy very like. And that colour too. I've been told that £2k is too cheap by a GT4OC member, even for a 1990, and the 137k miles could lead to all sorts of age related wear probs. And the all important specs are. Production 1990-1994 BHP 201@6000 Torque (lbs ft) 207lb@3600 Turbo Twin entry EFI L-Jetronic Intercooler Air-Air Dump Valve No Cubic Capacity 1998cc Intake Port size Large Valve (In-Ex in mm) 33.5/29.0 Lift (mm) 8.2/8.2 Throttle Body 55mm Injector Size 430cc Fuel Cut 12psi MPG 24-38 Fuel Unleaded Dimensions 14' 6"x 5' 9"
