I've recently been offered a Renault 12 Estate, its a 1976 model and has been off the road a few years but is totally original and running, bodywork needs attention but nothing too major, and most importantly its cheap, but its 250 miles away. What is the modifying potential of 1 of these, engine wise etc, am i correct in thinking they're 3 stud wheels? Was thinking of something like a gordini spec load lugger. What are the prospects of finding spares etc, any Renault fans here? BTW....i've wanted a R12 for a while.

I think that there's quite a few tuning options (Renault 5 stuff mostly) but I do know that they're coil sprung and look great slammed!

certainly sounds different and rare. went to look at one wedged in a garage and wild life with my dad in the 80's, everthing was seized IIRC I was have a good sniff around and it was pretty quirky, i was a bit gutted when he didn't save it. too much work for no profit tho at the time for him. Do it!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Mate of mine has built a Gordini Turbo-engined 12 saloon with five-speed from a fuego and water injection. Looks stock, but sits on shorter stiffer coils and wide steels off an 18 (I think). he's also got a normally aspirated gordini R4 that was in Retro. The 12 drives really well, no torque steer, handles great, loads of potential. A few years ago we did some work on the real thing, a 12 Gordini that had the factory engine upgrade to 165bhp, plus cage and rally spec suspension. That was pretty fantastic. I do like some Weber 45s gallery here: www.renospeed.co.uk/

A mate of mine had two of these, and I was going to get one. It was an annoying story. A local garage stored their trade ins on a public car park (not allowed to do) and I approached them, knowing full well it was theres, annd they denied it inc ase I was from the council. Went through the whole thing of waiting for a tow-away notice to appear on it then approached the council to save it, they said OK if I negotiated with their compound people once it had been removed and I'd have to pay the storage costs. But it dissappeared on day 26 of the 28 days notice to remove. It was an early shape one like in the picture as well. Steves was a really nice car, rode well, quiet, comfy, reliable. You just never see them. Are they inline engines?FWD with an inline engine is acceptable

Going the 12G route with the alloy 1600 engine isn't too hard work, with a 17G to get the parts from, but the 5G engine fits easy and gives a useful lift. The 5Gturbo shouldn't be difficult (check with derek at renospeed). have a look on here as well : www.renault12.com/And here for 5G info/bits : www.r5gordini.co.uk/

Del at renospeed is my mate - I used to work on my cars there sometimes in my pre-journo days. the R4 is quite modified - 45 webers on a 1400 gordini lump, r6 sports shocks, van torsion bars and brakes. It looks boggo and goes really very fast indeed We also built a fully coilover-converted 5 Gordini turbo which was pretty cool as well. Ah those were the days...
