Hi all, Just want some advise on how best to seal up my leaky sunroof on my Mk1 XR2. Ive had some people say to take it out and check the drainage as it seem to be coming in the car rather than down the drainage pipes but I'm concerned if its taken out completley the whole roof might cave in...damn fords and their rust!! lol Can you just get some sort of sealant to put round the lip of the sunroof itself?? Cheers

The sun roofs on these are very simple but there are so many places for them to leak. It could be leaking from the drains or from the mounting slots for the sunroof as these are meant to be screwed in really tight against a hidden seal to stop them leaking which can perish or sometimes they look fine and still leak. Get a bead of bathroom sealent round those as even if they aren't leaking then I can pretty much guarantee that they will at some point soon. THe best thing to do is to determine where the water is coming from, start pouring a watering can over it so find where it is coming from, and work from there. I'm not too far away from you (only in Tiverton) if you want I am sure I could find some time free to come and give you a hand to find and fix the problem as there is very little I don't know about my Fiesta after completely restoring it. Morning Phil, Ive tried the watering can trick but my car is as strange as i am. One day it will leak and the next day it wont. I think it depends on which way the rain is coming from! I'd love to be able to do more of the restoring myself buts its having te skills and know how. Need to do a welding course i reckon! I'll have a look at screws like you said and if i do need someone in the know i might tap you up on that offer! Cheers Aimz

before you start messing with sealant try clearing the dran tubes (if it's a factory fitted tilt and slide ?) i think Mk1s just had a tilt SR like an aftermarket one ? if so just undo all the screws split the 2 halves and reseal but don't use bathroom sealant cos if it aint rusty now it will be after uaing that stuff, as it cures it gives off fumes (that vinigar smell) that speeds up the rot, use propper automotive sealant.
