Well I've spent the last few years ferrying the family about in a selection of nice sensible moderns.(Audi,Beemer to name a few) and decided to treat myself to something for me I wanted something not too quirky and so chose this - 1.1 litre, lowered on GT Turbo legs and -40 springs, with the rear torsion bar turned. It really is stunning nick, with an unmarked interior and a tiny couple of marks on the paint.zero rust and refurbed rims. Now I've got to decide how to put my mark on it,without chaving it GT Turbo seats will be a good start, but I want to keep the body standard. As for the lump.I've already read about R19 16V swaps and clio 172's being dropped in,but the whole point in buying it,was to have something cheap to run,but best laid plans and all that........ ;D cheers Daz

Why not brace advances in technology as 172 engines have been fitted look at the 1.5/1.9 DCI engine conversion on it.
retain masses of MPG while giving it a bit more oumph.

Twins! ;D
The Clio diesel lumps not a bad shout, but I reckon picking up the lump and ancillaries, would be loads of wonga, whereas the 16V conversion is V cheap.I'm going to dive in today and tidy the few little marks and see if I can source a filler flap from somewhere I'll grab some more photos later.

Looks mint, love it! I prefer the earlier 5's with the smaller rear lights, but that looks sweet Signing up to the katoom forum too ;D

Daz, that looks totally immaculate. Really liking the plans for it too, sleeper all the way. The 16v conversion may have been done before but for good reason. If it's cheap enough it's got to be the way to go, plenty of grunt whilst retaining excellent economy. Keep us posted. Cheers, Richard.

Like them... May depend on that I own one myself.... I wouldn'n put a big engine in it. I think lightweight cars need lightweight engines. Unfortunaly Renault didn't built something like that. So there 're three ways which I think could be nice: -stock - run's with good mpg and also for retroness as OHV -NA tuned carbed C engine as high reving as possible (which sadly wouldn't be that high) -some kind of modern engine, I like the Daihatsu 3Cyl turbo and the subaru 3 Cyl injection lumps, but there won't be many of them in good shape left

Picked up an '89 GTX today, for a steal. I don't think I have ever seen a history file like it. One owner from new. Drives spot on,but has rotton sills and dodgy bonnet. Problem I have now, is whether to stick the alloys, interior and lump in mine or do the sills and flog it on to fund the 16V conversion. Does seem a shame to chop it up, but it's a cheap way to mod mine. Will post up some pics later

Probably got three options here. 1) Repair the sills, freshen the tired red paint and sell on for excellent profitability... in theory. 2) Repair the red one and keep it, get it as nice as possible and enjoy for as long as possible. Sell the white one to fund this. 3) Keep both! They're so small they only take up as much room as a single modern, right?

Stripped off some more plastic panels and it's even worse So the interior, alloys, radio and loads of trim parts are in mine and the vented discs and callipers are coming off tomorrow. The engine is staying put,as I don't want to pull out the 1.1 from mine and chuck in the 1.7,when my heart is set on a valver

take the engine and box out. well ideally subframe. you could do with g box and mounts off the 1.7. depends on what valver you get hold of as to how much you will need. that said. i recon if i was to do my kangoo again i'd fit the 2.0l 8 valve. a valver is a pig to work on in a tight space, and parts aren't that common anymore. no imoblised ecus are hard to get for starters as most valvers broken are later cars. make sure if you scrap the remains you cut out a nice big chunck of slam panel, you'll need to to get it in, so pays to have a spare you can have longer than the cuts that just bolts on top.

Funny you should say that,I was discussing on Retro Renault a 5 GTT on E bay, that's been fitted with a 2.0 8V from a Laguna...... Good point on the mounts and front panel. I know a lot of people have to modify GTT mounts when swapping the F Engines, as you just can't get hold of the GTX ones.

Will be keeping an eye on this thread! I just love R5, I was balancing between the R11 and R5 Turbo, but the problem with both is the availabity which is practically none here, if we don't count the odd one coming every six months with an asking price of 5 t-euros. Got two R5's with 1.8 16V engines in our club, and they are nice. I must say that if I can't get a car in black, it would need to be white! Any plans for the interior apart from the seats and radio? If you're planning for power, will you also save weight and ditch the rear seats etc? Or is this going to be practical and powerfull?
