hi guys, wondering if some one could shed some light. what is the minimum thread count / turns required on a track rod end before it can be considered unsafe? it is a M14 thread.
thanks,
Gobs

Track rod ends generally seat using a taper so any thread exposed past the locking mechanism (nylon or split pin) should be fine as long as the joint is done up tight.
I'm editing because I just realized you probably mean the thread into the rack.... as a rule of thumb try and get at least twice the diameter of the rod threaded in, so for M14 aim for 30mm as a minimum. (that's probably 20 turns if it's a 1.5mm thread)

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

What he said seems sensible.
If you can't get that try a different make of TRE - some are longer than others.

thanks Guys. now this is what confuses me
what difference would that twice the length i.e 30mm on the outer track rod make, when the inner track rod is screwed on to the rack with a m14 1.25 with 15mm of thread?
i mean both parts got the same amount of load or am i wrong?
basically i want to replace a track rod end with a rose joint but all the female rose joint are 15mm shorter then the track rod
thanks,
Gobs

Usually (in the ones I have seen) there is a small hole in the track rod end, if you use a small drill bit and the drill goes through it is out of safety, if the drill bit doesn't go through then the threads are in safety. If that makes sense.
Cheers,
Stu.

Same load both ends. 15mm/10 turns seems very short for M14.
Can you not get a longer bar either made up or off the shelf? Even better get one with a LH thread at one end and a RH thread at the other (and the corresponding rose joints and lock nuts of course!) then you can simply twist the bar to adjust the length instead of taking things to bits...

why do you want to rosejoint the TRE ? I can't see there being much benefit.

I suppose it's not under any load in any direction other than in line with the TRE/RJ so should be OK...
