Ok my daily driver was a 1.9 TDI Touran just paid £16k at a dealership a few weeks ago. Brand New...
I bought a £300 Audi Coupe last week, and I have now gave the Touran to the missus to drive about in a 13 year old car, and I LOVE IT..... ;D
Is there something wrong with me?

Seth's right I'm afraid. Touran depresses me hugely.
For my own use I haven't paid more than a grand for anything since 1994, and I've had way more fun and suffered far less depreciation than buying new.
Glad you came to your senses!

I quite like the Touran, good for the tip run, get a warranty n stuff with it too, and it's been chipped as well (140 BHP) so it's no slouch... Plus giving a car to the missus, it's not fair me imposing my beliefs on her and giving her an old motah to run about it... Especially with my kid on the way... Anyway we are missing the point, I am declaring my love for my Audi. ;D

I did the same last year, Its ok having a Retro but the ones I am intrested in (from and owning point of view) would of not been up to the milleage, I did 20K in 6 months on the 05 Hocus Pocus Focus. I decided to sell when i moved jobs cus it was a bit dull to drive (its predecssor wasmuch better), Did not loose too much.
ahh well. Is the touran the Ibza version of the Sharon/ford jobbie?

Fair point, and for that reason we bought a low-miles Carina E which three years later is still more than big enough for the two kids we now have. MPV type things, certainly secondhand, offered rubbish value for money.

(I don't agree with the mega reliable comment though as older cars can be just as relaible especially as there's much less to go wrong!) Congrats on the baby! They're ace! I still get why people buy new TBH, couldn't see me doing it too often though. Smart car for Ms R perhaps or even a new Mini, or work vehicle if things took off big with the business.
There are some capable retros or old bargains out there though. the market value of my sapph is criminally low at the moment, and after a service the old badboy just got 5 aldults and bags to Scotland and back, covering a total of 680 miles since the service, all without a moan.
Pity its Mot time but that shouldn't be too bad i hope
Audi Coupe at 300 quids sounds like a good deal. at least you have a good back up plan with the newee.

I don't think we'd ever have a totally retro household.... Claire likes some of the stuff I perv over on ebay (hence buying the GTE cab) but she has a real thing about reliability, so one newish and one 'deathtrap' is pretty much how it'll stay!

Same here, except without a garage, I have two newish smokers (9-3TiD and A2TDI), the former is company sponsored, the latter is a deamon frugal anti depreciation machine! I'll be getting something extra as soon as a garage is feasable, either a BEC or a 240 GLT with the intention of putting a T5 in there, but until then I'll suffer the comfort and coolness of my modern smokers ta very much . The safety of my family is paramount, and when I was running a car on my own, I would run things till they broke... Now in my old age I am getting more into the preventative maintenance, and improving safety...Maybe I should have bought a Volvo...

always been an all retro family, between me and the wife thats about 20k per year. never been stranded yet!!! just keep them serviced! ;D
the thing is too me is that cars i drive where ment to run high mileages(the carlton is rep tastic) ill admit if i get a 60,s motor in i tend to run a newer(80,s ) car as well. but my 66 minx never ever let me down, only punted it on because of the lack of rear belt options.
congrats on loving the old audi better than the modern debt mobile ;D ;D

Reliable! 1.9/2.0 Tdi (Pd) Vw group engines 1: acumalate oil in the Air intake pipes and then leak onto the floor from the intercooler pipes. 2: Air intake pipes are "snap" fit and the vibration from the engine wears the alloy fingers which cause the pipes to come unattached. 3:The strain on the camshaft from opening those four high pressure pump/injectors can result in the camshaft being worn out in less than 40,000 miles (extreme case) 4:The wiring for the pump/injectors is [glow=red,2,300]Inside[/glow] the engine and goes very brittle as they age. 5: The "dual mass" flywheels have a habit of wareing out long before the clutch, and if left unchecked will rub into the gearbox housing, The gearbox is a magnessium alloy and will then catch fire taking the rest of the car with it! Big VW recall to deal with this going on now. 6: The clutch slave cylinder has a habit of leaking on the 6 speed models and is part of the release bearing, which means the gearbox has to come out to fix it. 7:The Alternator pully is a free wheel (like the back of a bike) that smooths the undulations of the engine to keep the charge smooth to the Alternator. They sieze and can make the belts jump off or shread. 8: I've said it before, If you ever put petrol in by mistake DO NOT drive anywhere even if it's only a small amount, It'll cost somewhere between £6,000 - £8,000 to put right if the engine goes. These engines will run on an almost 100% petrol mix but the detonation and extreme internal heat will cause a huge meltdown And thats just off the top of my head. Did anyone ever wonder why VW stopped using the "if only everything was as reliable as a VW" tagline? Use it for 3 years and get another, it's the only way too do it (I'm too tight for that though ) On a positive note........nice Audi ;D

My missus runs a RAV4 Because she claims its the "sensible" choice We have a six year old son and a soon to be very large dog.The boot is just about big enough for her handbag. Where as I can fold down the rear seats in my dub and lay flat, and i'm six foot one!Yet still she mutters about my car being impractical
