OK, I'm going to come right out and say it: I FAIL!
More accurately, I failed at the weekend to use my camera.
On the plus side, I see this as a sign that the weekend was so damn awesome, amazing and exciting that I really didn't spare a moment to think about taking photos....
It's true. Usually I'm champing at the bit to get the camera out and get snapping. I'd made sure it was fully charged, the memory card had been cleared so that I could get LOTS of photos....yet as soon as I got there, the amazing atmosphere took over and the poor Canon lived in its bag until Sunday afternoon.
There are, of course, some consolations.
1) I had the best Gathering EVER because A) it simply was the best one ever and B) because I made sure I really enjoyed every single minute of it.
2) I kinda knew anything I shot would appear on Retro Rides taken by someone else, so I figured I'd leave the camera alone and just enjoy the day....and it worked because it's been GREAT to see all the shots everyone took. Re-living the weekend from someone elses eyes.
However...
I'm sure you've all heard the saying "Never meet your heroes"?
Well, this weekend I was kindly offered a passenger ride in a car that is very muchone of my heroes my hero. So is the owner. With the famous phrase ringing around my head, I was really nervous about taking a ride up the hill in a car I have loved and admired from the first time I read about it and especially since I saw it in the flesh for the first time a year or so ago when it came over to Area 52.
I had to take my camera, I just had to. The chance to record a ride with a brilliant friend in a car that is without doubt one of my favourite cars in the world. I was honoured and flattered that I was allowed the chance to ride up the hill in it, so I was not going to let that chance pass by on memory alone.
I kid you not (and I don't care if I sound like a complete wuss) I literally have a huge lump in my throat right now as I write this...because for me this was truly one of those moments and I wanted to capture it for good. For me, for Gareth and for Si (HongKongPhooey).
Despite not having picked my camera up all weekend, this was one shot I wasn't going to miss and I really wanted to make it count. I hope I succeeded?
If the saying "Never meet your heroes" is true, then Gareth and his Celica go well against the grain. That trip up the hill was one of the most memorable moments I've ever had.
Gareth and his incredible car stand for everything I could ever aspire to and I know, even though we didn't speak about it, as the car was piloted up the hill, Gareth was doing it not just for himself, but for Si too. To be in the passenger seat was emotional to say the least. I just hope I did it justice? Thank you Gareth.
So there you go, my one shot to sum up RRG11. An incredible weekend of amazing friends and amazing cars. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen.
Come on then, what single shot do you have to sum the weekend up? One photo to define the best weekend of the year. Please post it here:
