Typical old school breakers, take off what you want & they tell you how much it is, also some parts already taken off, or if you can't get something off, couple of extra quid soon sorts it. I'll PM directions, easier than long post on here

I might like to know also...
Got a mate up Ilkeston he's being paid for his old scrap cars so I can askwhere he's taken them. Just scrapped a big 1970s Cadillac and he got best part of £200 for that weighed in.

Hang on guys!!!
Some of you seme to be confused between a scrap metal dealer and a scrap yard and paying to get someone to come pick your car up and then take it to the scrap metal dealer for you as opposed to dropping your car off.
A scrap yard (as in one of those places where you go to get spares for your car) will most likely give you nothing for your car if you go and drop it off and if they pick it up they will probably charge you. Its not because they are mugging you out its because they need to make money! it costs them a hell of alot in petrol to go pick up cars and they to pay for up keep on their yards etc. They are middle men who do the hard work for you.
Then theres scrap metal dealers, (as in a place with a crusher that deals in scrap metals of all kinds not just cars, they don't keep cars laying around, it goes straight in the crusher and gets sent off to be melted down.) These are the people who will give you £50 a car if you go drop it off into thier crusher. They don't sell you any car parts and they don't have to spend money to go pick it up so you see more of the profit by cutting out the middle man!.
understand?
(and yes it is because china is buying it all, melting it down and then selling it back to us at a huge profit!!!!!!!!)

Indeed. Scrap shells and other such are best disposed of direct to the metal merchants though. So long as you have a way of getting them up there.

Hang on guys!!! ... understand? I think most/all already understood difference between breaker and scrap dealer... but now scrap metal price is changing the situation so that a lot of car breakers (decent ones around Nottinham anyway!) will come and collect cars for free, instead of charging. They make their money form the scrap as well as the parts. It's only some taking advantage of peoples ignorance of scrap value to keep charging for colllection - they might claim they need to charge, but since when have breakers not pleaded total poverty? Indeed a local breaker gave *me* a fiver for a TOTALLY stripped scirocco shell I delivered to them (it was a Saturday, and the 'metal recycling' place had already shut by the time I got my moving )

my local big breaker (Mark Hill Salvage) sells parts but also crushes stuff onsite, hence they will pay for delivered cars.... believe round here the council subsidise car collection so they'll do that for free. i guess it depends if it's a breaker (who only make money out of the good parts, and have to pay for tyre/battery/oil disposal) or a scrap merchant (who will sell off the good bits, but not hang onto stuff for too long and crush it as soon as they can). round here we still have the scrapman doing his weekly rounds with his van, collecting fridges and dead wheels.... and knackered polo engines out of my garden
