Well I got everything hooked up. Throttle cable, choke, fuel lines, vacuum and water. Got all excited, made sure to reconnect the battery, engaged the choke, turned the key to ignition 1, dash lights on, then turned again to fire it up... and... "CLICK!" dead... Even the clock in the car had stopped. Checked all fuses and they were all fine. WTF?! Checked wires in every location that I've been near, and I found a cable under the dash that goes to one of the speakers had popped out. I thought that it might have touched some metal and shorted, so I connected that back up. Tried again. Nothing.
My dad came over to see what I was doing and messed around in the engine bay a little, then asked me to try again. Turned over and eventually fired up! Ran great too! Turns out all he did was tighten up the battery terminals a little bit... Yes I feel very stupid. But then a wild fuel leak appeared! Looks like it's coming out of the connection to the fuel regulator. Cock.
I'm just having a break so I can eat a cheese toastie, but I'll head back out there, try and sort out this leak, and get a video of it running!

Leak solved! Idle sorted! Test drive done! Runs, sounds and goes better than I thought it would! Videos and remaining pics will be posted in the next couple of days because I'm going to be busy tomorrow enjoying the car (whilst praying to gods of all religions that something doesn't break) and out buying camping stuff for The Gathering next weekend! Party on!  |

Brilliant stuff, just read from the beginning, I know what you're going through with wheels, but think you made the right choice on the Minilights. You just can't go wrong with them  Bike carbs look good too, another job I plan to do to the Escort but just never seem to get stuck into! I have most of the bits in the garage to do it too, but the van just keeps getting in the way  Look forward to seeing/hearing this at RRG  |

Sounds awesome, power gains??? Well it "goes" better! But I have nothing in the way of figures. Never had it on a rolling road or anything, although it would be interesting to know. I've heard of people claiming increases of 10bhp to 20bhp just from upgrading to bike carbs, but I have no idea to be honest! |

Well I'm impressed, my dad was a massivs Capri man when I was a kid had a mk1 3.0l with a cologne box arch kit a few mk2's including a jps and brooklands 280 before he started acting old.. Nice work mate

Balls... Vacuum hose fitting for the brake servo snapped off the inlet just as I'm dropping off my girlfriend at her place. Brakes barely work and engine is running like curse word drawing in air. I've just made an emergency call to my old man to bring over some chemical metal stuff to try and bodge it to make the half hour drive home. It's either that or plug the hole in the inlet to stop the engine drawing in air and carefully drive back with weak brakes... Cars are fun!

Ever tried driving with the vacuum for the brake servo disconnected? Not fun! I bandaged up the inlet manifold with some industrial tape stuff donated by my dad (I think it's used for telecoms cabling) which blocked the hole where the fitting had broken off and allowed me to drive home. However with no vacuum it felt as if I had no brakes at all. I'll always carry some of this weird orange tape in the car as I'm sure it'd be great for fixing hose leaks! As soon as I got back I set about removing the carbs and manifold, in the rain, so I could take the manifold inside, drill out a hole, tap it and fit a new brass fitting. I also took the opportunity to better secure the vacuum lines for the vac advance (notice the thicker vacuum piping, which replaced the flimsy stuff that collapsed on itself). The bike carbs got me to and from the Gathering (which might I add was an awesome weekend). Success! However there were some tiny hiccups... Before setting off I noticed a water leak from the manifold, so I gave myself an hour to fix it. Job done. Half way down to Gloucestershire the car started running odd, and on arriving at the campsite it was spitting, popping and generally running a bit poo. Turns out the silicone inlet pipes were slipping off the carbs, one of which not being attached at all... No worries, as I had tools with me. Sorted. After the Gathering I decided to order new inlet rubbers and skinny jubilee clips for the carb side as the old ones just seemed to be squeezing the carbs off. Refitted the carbs with the new rubbers, clips and a smear of Hylomar Blue for good luck, then balanced the carbs with a Gunson Carbalancer which, although not incredibly accurate, did a good job. No more pops and spits at idle! The exhaust still pops and bangs when decelerating, but that's mandatory of course In other news, tyres! Cock. Front left side light stopped working after being dimmer than the drivers side for a couple of days. Swapped bulbs around which proves the bulb is fine, but I have no idea about the black magic of car electric wizardry so don't really know where to start. Anybody know if this is likely to be an earthing problem? I've got a horrible feeling I'm gonna have to get a multimeter and figure out how to use it.
Not only that, but I was late for work today due to the throttle return springs deciding they'd had enough of returning the throttle. I got that fixed (cable ties to the rescue!) but whilst doing so found a bit of fuel dripping from the inlet flange between two runners... I'm not sure if the leak was elsewhere and the fuel was running along part of the inlet, but the leak now seems to have gone. Bloody phantom fuel leak... Might it have something to do with having full choke to start the car whilst the throttle was stuck fully open without the return spring (boy did the motor scream!) possibly causing some flooding somewhere? I don't know, I'm thinking out loud here. I'll keep an eye on it and report back if something explodes.
Oh and I've not test fitted the two new wheels yet... I'll get on to it soon, honest!

Had the same problem with mine dude! Almost 100% going to be a bad earth with an old ford. Assuming you've checked fuses etc? Tried swapping the units over left to right to see what works/ doesn't?
I ended up just buying a new pair of lights for £20, job done.

Cheers Skoze, didn't think about swapping them. I'll give swapping the units around a shot, then work my way back from there. I'm hoping it's something simple like the earth in the headlamp bowl or just the contact surfaces in the lamp unit need a clean. All fuses are good too. Haven't had a look around the headlight relay yet, although I'm not sure that has anything to do with side lights?

So I've bought this to help with the dodgy electrics. After a quick Google to read up on electrical faults with Capri's I'm sure it'll come into use a fair few times in the future. IMG_20130831_110621 by Victory Over All, on Flickr I wanted to make sure that I fit my bolt-on arches properly by actually bolting them on and not just using self tappers, so I got a whole bunch of rivnuts, button head bolts and washers, as well as a rivnut installing tool. Anyway, this rubber will sit between the arch and the body of the car to tidy it up, fill any little gaps and hopefully stop water creeping in. So the fuel leak returned this morning... It only seems to be when the engine has just stopped running, as I can't find it at all when it's running. Fuel seems to be collecting along the bottom of the inlet flange, just under the hole next to the left runner on the photo below.  IMG_20130831_140231 by Victory Over All, on Flickr I've tried running my finger along the underneath of the flange to figure out where it's coming from, and it seems like it could be coming from the 4th inlet, closest to the firewall, just where the flange meets the head. At least I think this is where it's coming from. It seems to be so slight that it's making it hard to locate. Could it be leaking from the between the head and flange? I thought that fuel generally wouldn't leak from there, and it would more likely be an air leak? If there is a leak there, would removing the inlet and putting a smear of hylomar blue there help to seal it? Any ideas welcome! |

Tightened up all of the nuts on the manifold, went for a good drive, no sign of the leak afterwards... I have a feeling this leak isn't done with me yet though!

Fully welded, checked for pin holes and plugged them all up, then a smear of chemical metal for good measure, hence the ugly mess. First thing I've ever welded and I was a bit paranoid about pin holes so tried to be as thorough as possible, but it's still a possibility. I've heard of using a UV dye to find fuel leaks (I've asked about it in the question section) and thought this stuff and a mirror could help. I'll give it a run and check again in the morning for the leak. I'm hoping that just nipping up all the bolts has cured it but I doubt it...
