Hi Right i have a very random problem with my e21, it keeps flatterning the battery randomly? It started a while back when i kept leaving the stereo on (off the perminant live so to use in eveings at shows etc). This killed the battery so i gave it a charge and like a muppet i did it again a week later! This really did kill it so i decided to change it with a good diesel equivelent from a reputable parts store near me in coalville (shepherd and wilson). I had it running sweet as for a good month then one very sunny sunday afternoon got in it to pop down to the shops and....click nothing! I hadnt left the stereo on or the lights etc etc nothing? I was about to go on my hols so left it for a couple a weeks. Got back and eveytime i wanted to move/use it i used jump leads....gave it a charge the otherday, popped it in started first time, just gone into it after 2 days and...yup its flat, nothing on etc etc
I'm meega confused and a bit miffed as it wasnt the cheapest battery to replace! Any ideas? Cheers Arron

Sounds like there is a drain somewhere! Is there a courtesy light in the boot? Whip the bulb out and see if it fixes the problem.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Could be draining back through a faulty alternator.

Either take it to an auto electricians or disconnect it for a couple of days, IIRC its something to do with a faulty diode in the rectifier pack can cause this problem.

Buy your self a cheap multimeter with an ammeter function. Remove the positive terminal from the battery and put the multimeter in between the lead you just removed and the battery. Firstly you will be able to see if you have got a drain from somewhere or the battery is just borked, (i have had new batteries give agro before so don't guess..........test! ;D) If you establish there is a drain, you need to watch the meter and pull the fuses one by one. The fuse that makes the meter read zero is the circuit with the fault. Once you know this you can then go deeper (short circuit, faulty diodes ect ect) Hope this helps

remove the neg terminal and put a bulb between the lead and the neg terminal, if it lights you have a drain, wip out one fuses one at a time till the bulb goes out when it's out that's the drain if not try unplugging the alt if the alt.

The only trouble with a bulb is that it wont light if there are only a few milivolts going through it. Plus a multimeter is probably one of the most invaluable tools you can ever own when it comes to older cars
