Congratulations on passing your test - A whole world of fun awaits!
Don't worry too much about the MOT failure - It's all part of the classic/retro car owning tapestry and I am sure you will get it sorted in no time.

If it only needs a new doorstep, that is only a couple of hours work and a £15 panel. Got to be cheaper to get that done rather than fork out the insurance on the landy (which I would imagine is going to be hefty). But learning to weld is one of the most useful skills with classic mini ownership ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Congrats on the driving test. Bad luck with the MoT. At least it's not too bad and your going to fix it. Learning to weld is essential...
My mini never passed it's mot firs time... there was always somthing wrong. The record was three pages of failiure... still got in throuh inside the free re-test window!

I actually always planned to fix it, but i didnt expect it to be soon!
Theres a 10 week 30 hour welding course at a college about half an hour from me, starting next january, and i was planning to do that, that way I'm properly taught and not a burden on my dad.
I'm attempting to get insured on something, be it the landy or my mums car, because i can always cancel it after a month or two.
Thankyou all for the help and stuff so far, i'll get there eventually!
850mini, I'm near farnham in surrey,

Right then, done a bit of work.
The indicators and brake lights both stopped working on the way to the MOT, sods law! I was told they worked on a certain junction so that means they broke less than a minute away from the test center. But after some fettling today i change a few fuses and they still didnt work. So i took off the airbox and found an inline fuse, changed that, and they worked again!
So thats that part of the fail sheet sorted. It also failed on seatbelt mounting points and doorsteps, so its just those to do and it can go for another MOT.
We thought of getting another car, or a cheap runabout to use for a few months but it was just going to cost too much, and nobody would insure me on our land rover, so this morning we thought we may as well weld it! So i got on sorting the electrics.
Need to order a passenger side doorstep tonight and then we're ready to go.

Its still actually got a tiny bit of MOT left so I might be able to use it for a little while and fix it while its rolling, so to speak And indeed! its annoying, but i'd rather have a pain in the ![](http://i25.tinypic.com/2005o2q.jpg) car, than a dull new one Oh and i ordered a doorstep last night, so i'll have two ready to go on soon enough!

Not all moderns are dull if you choose them right ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . It's good to see you are getting stuck in, and getting on with it ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) . The colour quite suits it if you ask me!

So did it actually FAIL an mot? Or did you take it for a pretest...
don't think you get the grace period anymore since it all went computer based. Once it fails, Thats it, No more using it till it passes again, Regardless of if you have 2 months left..
Might be worth checking with scaryoldcortina or another tester? I'm just saying as ive heard this mentioned before, And don't want you getting stung driving an un-mot'd car..

It was a pretest.
Its ok though, its been off the road since the thursday before last anyway. It blew an oil seal on the way home from college and dumped all its oil, a lot of it on the engine, which then smoked Its just lucky i stopped when i did because there was barely any left.
MOT runs out on tuesday so its going in the shed for welding soon, I'm just addressing small problems before it goes back on the ground.

I'm just saying as ive heard this mentioned before, And don't want you getting stung driving an un-mot'd car.. No, that's not right. Nothing has changed in that respect in that if your car is MOT'd until, say, 6th December and it fails an MOT tomorrow, you are still covered by the old MOT until 6th December. This then allows you to continue using the vehicle whilst the repairs are carried out. You are, of course, liable for any con and use offences or dangerous condition that may arise from faults with your car and it might be a bit difficult, in the event that you have an RTC to argue that you were unaware of a contributory, pre-existing mechanical defect if it was pointed out to you during an MOT test!

I think thats precisely the point, You couldnt get away with saying you wernt aware of a problem. Whereas before no one knew about the red slip in the glovebox...

Havent updated this for ages, but a lot has happened. It blew and oil seal, three days after I started driving it on the road, Had it off the road for ages, had the driveshaft out, fitted new cv boots, new oil went in, all the rest. Mot ran out in that time so the doorsteps have had to be done. One side is half done, here is some pictures. ![](http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh36/86-Mini-Chelsea/381834_10150516655128833_713413832_10774780_1712778643_n.jpg) ![](http://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/381834_10150516655138833_713413832_10774781_661787358_n.jpg) What remained of the original sill inside the oversill ![](http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh36/86-Mini-Chelsea/390016_10150517112228833_713413832_10775974_1189333195_n.jpg) ![](http://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/383862_10150514941538833_713413832_10768853_238985277_n.jpg) Also, got the above wheels for 60 quid posted so I need to refurb those and get them on!

Righty! Doors are back on, both doorsteps are done and painted, then I assembled and trouble shooted it all yesterday. It went in for its MOT this morning, and I got the call just over an hour ago, it passed! My scooter must have known this because I was an hour late for college today due to it refusing to start, had to get the train in the end! But nice timing sort of, means I can drive to college tomorrow, finally after three months. The last photo I took before it went yesterday: ![](http://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/397685_10150591720748833_713413832_11079474_236428458_n.jpg) Next step is to get those alloys on ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Well done! Get those lovely wheels on it pronto. Remember to fit tyres as well, otherwise you get horrible road noise and braking distance goes right down.
