Jaguar XJ8 convertible going in for an IVA and its close on the axle weights.
A smaller battery (it has a type 019 in the boot at the minute) would be an easy weight shaving. Type 019s have anywhere between 90 and 100 Ah nominal rating and upwards of 750 cold crank amps.
How small dare I go on the cold crank amp rating? (its a 4.0 V8 with a geared starter, and will only get used in warm weather)
Type 063 with 500 cold crank amps? Smaller still?

Some smaller batteries have higher cranking amps than others. You may be able to get a higher amp battery of a high specification which still gives you a weight saving over the 019 type. I think 063 might be pushing it though!

ultima batterys give more power for a smaller size but they also wiegh a lot more

Just get down the scrap yard and pick up something smaller, let them know what you are doing and make sure they'll swap it for a bigger one if it's not man enough for the job, you could always jump it from cold as long as it will start from warm for the purpose of the test I suppose.
Edit just remembered they are about the size of a lorry battery, we had one go on a family Merc, swapped it for my good spare one from a diesel astra, which was about half the rating, has been no problem in the last 12 months, only time it has gone down was when the car was parked up for a month. I would say Jag specified a huge battery not so much for the cranking power but reserve capacity, there could be a fair old drain on it when its not running that could easily pull a small battery down to the point it wouldn't start it.
