one of my sealed beam headlights lights has stopped working so I'll probably convert to halogen.
I know halogen bulbs will be brighter and easier to change, but do they draw more or less power.
also its a 7" unit so common, anyone know off the top of their head what scrap yard fodder to look out for,

The current draw will depend on the watt rating of the bulb. Sealed beams are probably 45/60 (dipped/main) and most standard H4 halogens are also 60W or thereabouts I think.

You can get a pair of conversion lamps off ebay for about £20. £25 if you want crystal clear ones. I ran a set in my MX5 (to replace normal halogen ones that took a H4) and they were stacks better. For that price there isn't a lot of point going to a scrapyard (who will probably as the same money!)

^^ What he said. I bought a pair for the 400e for about £25 including bulbs. Not worth the aggro looking for second hand ones IMO. e-gay is your friend

Strictly speaking you should fit a relay to power the halogen lamps as they take more amps which is the concern when upgrading as the switch could burn out of the wiring could become hot. You don't want your ride going up in smoke for the sake of a few quid

Strictly speaking you should fit a relay to power the halogen lamps as they take more amps which is the concern when upgrading as the switch could burn out of the wiring could become hot. You don't want your ride going up in smoke for the sake of a few quid If both sealed beam and halogen bulbs are 60W main beams then how will they draw more current? (I know nothing about sealed beams, so I'm just going off what Seth said about them being 60W.) Relaying them is a good idea though, results in much better lights normally thanks to there being so much less resistance than going through the loom and switch. I keep meaning to get around to relaying the dipped beams in the 'rocco as they're a bit dim for H4's.

tbh, they'll draw the exact same amount of current - but if the car came with sealed beams as standard, it's not exactly going to be a modern car is it? In which case, the copper wires will have deteriorated with age, and oxidised.
Running a relay, is just a safety measure - plus there's a good chance the original wires have just been acting like massive resistors, cutting down on the available current to the bulbs anyway!
