Anyone ever built one?
Plenty of info on the net and could pick up the parts for about a tenner, but are they safe? what about boost spikes?
I'm don't know much about turbo cars to be honest but I'm happy to grab a bargain and build my own if its gonna work and I have been told the cheap MBC's are not great either.

Using a "bleed valve" is pretty much one of the worst ways to control boost IMO, the best of the cheap types to use, are the ball+spring types Instead of the boost building up, and slowly building up at the wastegate, (which invariably slowly starts to open earlier than you want) there's a small ball-bearing sealing the entrance to the wastegate, held in place by a spring. When boost gets to the amount that you want, the ball-bearing cracks open against the spring pressure, allowing the wastegate to open. When my uni loan comes in, I'll be getting one about £20 on fleabay, and well worth the pennies!

The best DIY boost controller is a boost level activated PWM controlled electronic bleeder valve. You'll have to be handy with the soldering iron though

I've got a ball bearing type in the garage off my Brat as I've upgraded to an electronic boost controller, you can have it for a tenner posted if that's what youre after as it worked fine for me until my "upgrade"! Tim

They do spike bad my MR2 was set to .8 bar and would of spike over 1bar (hence why it was set to .8 not 1 bar like I wanted)

Some days you just need to take a grinder to an inanimate object, just to make your day a tiny bit better!!

What type hoses were you using to connect the valve? I found my SX spiking when using silicon vacuum hose, which aren't really designed for boost - replaced them with proper rubber ones and the spiking went. Put it down to the hoses expanding ever so slightly before opening the valve

What about these? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MANUAL-BOOST-CONTROLLER-SMOKED-GAUGE-IMPREZA-WRX-STI-/360385018364?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item53e89ef9fcObviously they are dearer than a tenner, but i have to buy a gauge as well as the volvo ones don't have numbers on and my LPT version don't have a gauge anyway. The ECU cuts the ignition at 15psi, but the engine should be able to take more than that anyway so if i run it around 12 to 13psi i should have a safety margin if there is any doubt about boost spikes? I am happy to buy a second hand one but that one comes with all the extra bits and bobs and the gauge, so its probably no dearer overall. Does that sound sensible? its a 500 quid car so its not like its gonna cost me a fortune if it goes bang and this one is pretty much just a practise run for building a much better looking, more powerfull 16v one in the future.

The type in that link, is just a cheap and nasty bleed valve - it's only one up from the £10 brass types.... it just looks shinier
