Oh, the SE4 does look fantastic but I think they all came with straight sixes didn't they? Also, was the chassis different? I think you're right - straight six from the Zephyr / Zodiac? Could be talking bobbins here though and I can't be arzed to Google it ;D A 302 Ford would be great.... I think something like a Lexus LS400 V8 would R0oL!!

the scimitars are wonderful, we have had 6, and still own 5! they handle realy well, with double wishbone triumph front susspension, and trailing arm rear sus with a jag back axle.
fibreglass is suprisingly strong, i know alot of people who have suvived accidents in glass cars that reacon they wouldnt be here if it where a steel car! (you go and compare the material specs of good glassfibre, and steel - the sheer strength is nearly the same but the impact resistance is alot more.
the reason scimitars are so cheap is mainly down to the reliant name... they tried to keep them seperate from their smaller cars (even had seperate dealerships for both) but they where still branded as the same, the other thing is glass fibre, no body trusts it because its 'plastic' (the plastic to metal ratio of a scimitar to a modern car is probably not far off, as the scimitar has that huge chassis, and modern cars have plastic wings, trailgates, bumpers etc etc.
the SE4 is the earlyiest, also called the scimitar coupe, strait 6 ford engine, then after a while it became the SE4a - available with various ford v6s and v4s (2.5v6 and 3.0v6, 2.0v4)
then the se5 came about thats the first one with the GTE body, this had the same interior as the se4, it also had the same v6 or v4 options, as well as a auto, or manual od gearboxs
that was then replaced with the se5a, different interior, and the v4engine binned, however some of these had the 4speed non od box (3 rail box, bigger version of the bullet box but its name escapes me) and these are the most saught after.
then the arival of the se6 in 1976, all new design, not much the same, it is bigger and heavier, and has rubber bumpers, alot more of a cruiser.
the the se6a came out, minor mods, nothing worth loosing sleep over.
after that there where the SE6b with the cologne and the se6c with no roof!
they are very reliable, dads has been to france 3 times, and has never let us down, parts are easy to come by being mostly triumph and ford, and over heating is abit of a myth, and only realuy effects the SE6 series cars with a sealed system, parts are esily and cheaply sourced to make it a open system which pretty much solves the problems.
great cars, handle and performe well, as well as being practicle, will show up any mgb on the straits and in the bends.
the owners club is full of the standard flat capped fools so although usefull, take it with a pinch of salt, but buy the best you can afford, there are alot for sale, and the line between a shitter and a good'un is not a great deal, watch out for wonky sills on the SE5s as its a sign that the metal in the shell has expanded, and although not structual, its pretty much impossible to put right, other than that its all pretty strait forward car buying stuff.
hope that helps,
Nick

Well I'm seriously considering selling all my tat to get one as a project. Though the Dolly Sprint on throttle bodies idea is also still very much in mind.
