My Nissan Bluebird 1.6 (CA16S engine) keeps misfiring and cutting out at seemingly at random, Ended up on the back of a recovery truck the last time I attempted a motorway journey. I've replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter and regular use carb cleaner but the problem still persists. Knackered Carb? Its the only thing I can think of now TBH. Could I upgrade to a decent Weber carb without much fuss?
Cheers, Pete

Carb problems usually don't cause misfiring and cutting out, I would suspect a electrical/ignition problem. I don't know what kind of ignition system you have, but check for wires rubbing and shorting out. Also, a faulty coil will give these symptoms, but usually only when hot, something to consider.

One thing that will cause that is water in the fuel. I had it on my old Prairie when I first got it. The small breather tube that runs next to the fuel filler pipe under the rear arch had a rust hole in it which let in water sprayed off the wheel when it was wet. If you have a clear inline filter check it for water and inspect the filler neck for rot.
If it's crud/water in the carb you can clear it by pulling off the filter, revving the engine right up then imeadiately cover the carb with a wadded up rag. Make sure it can't such it in though! Keep it there until the engine nearly dies whilst holding the trottle full open. It'll create a huge vacuum in the carb which will suck pretty much anything through unless it's solid and too big to pass a jet. It'll certainly clear water as I used to have to do it all the time on my Prairie until I finally fixed the filler neck. Best to uncover the carb before the engine completely dies as it'll flood it and make it hard to restart.
Ignition on the CA's is a pretty simple electronic ignition and usually trouble free. Bad connections are a possibility but other that that, just be sure that HT leads, cap, rotor and plugs are in good shape.
