hi i know its not retro but needs to be sorted so i can get my head round it. the wifes clio (52 plate) has had a few issues that have all been fixed and has had gearbox gaitor and seals done and has now developed a new noise when turning right on the wheel. the noise is only noticable at slow speeds. i have jacked up the car tonight both sides on stands and tried to move the shafts to see if there is any excess play in them and none. next i span the passenger side wheel and had the noise coming through fom the gearbox end of the shaft (passenger side) then tried the same on the drivers side and the noise came again from the passenger side. i have done a quick clip of it the it starts half way through the video any ideas what this could be? need to try and fix it as my wife is always thinking of gearbox faliure after getting stranded in a moonsoon storm in the seat arosa a few years ago cheers in advance

Are the wheels turning in opposite directions on the video? If so how many miles has it done, sounds like the planet gears/diff pins worn to me. If its had new seals did it run a bit low on oil as first thing to suffer is normally the centre of the diff the planet gears don't rely on bearings so the pin just starts wearing. Also check the oil level!!! My multipla sounded similar, but occasionally the wheels locked up with a bang. But then look at the planet gears.

if the n/s shaft has been disturbed for a cv boot etc i would expect that one of the bearings on the inner joint has come adrift and deposited the needle rollers into the diff

hi
the box was leaking from the seal side and we had the drive shaft gaitor replaced on both sides of the gear box. the garage next to work did the work and topped back up with oil, from thinking back it never made this noise until after this session in the garage.
when i had the car jacked up tonight and spun the wheel backwards on the passenger side the drivers side turned a little but not to the same extent as the wheel i was spinngin.
the car has done 96000 miles and ended up costing loads latley. any ideas how easy it is to check the oil on the clio and also the diff fixing?

right then checked the wheels spinning in opersit directions and they do when you turn it buy the wheel, whilst under the car i turned the passenger side shaft by hand and the drivers side wheel moved round... then did the same by turning the drivers side shaft and the passenger side wheel didnt move. but if you do it from the wheels they both move.
checked the oil level and it was about 1/4 to 1/3 of a litre to top up to spil out level
whilst up on stands put car in reverse for a bit then 2nd gear to get the oil throughout the box and still got the noise on the passenger side.
re checked the oil after that and still perfect level
any ideas what to do next?

If you spin one and the other goes the other way only the driveshafts and diff are moving. If your getting the noise then its either diff or driveshaft fault. If so I would drain the oil into a clean container, check it for bits of crud, pop the gaitors off and look inside, you should see the inside of this (inside red circle) Thats the end of the diff, it'll have slots which 3 or 4 bearings (fitted to driveshafts) run in to allow the driveshafts in and out movement, check the bearings are complete, as froggy says they do come apart sometimes. If they seem ok/complete, grab the bit with the grooves in and wiggle it in and out, there should be very little play if theres a lot and you keep driving it the planet gears will get smashed to pieces like mine did. On another note, its probably past the end of its designed life, scenics were designed for about 80k, along with most cars thats why you see so many new cars on 80k plus with failed gearboxes, the whole "maintainence free" gearboxes don't have long lives.
