Any leads on the fuggin bandits that pinched it? They've been caught which is a good thing, but it looks like the British justice system may well 'err on the side of caution' which sickens me to the stomach. I'll let Ewan explain in more detail when he gets chance. In the meantime, car now back in safe hands at home where it belongs:

Glad you got this back fella - and definitely home site for insurance dealings - the 'storage' facilities will move it on a forklift and bang it off anything and everything...... been there, had that Pity on the cautious approach to the thieving scum - I thought UK was getting all 'tough on crime' now - 6yrs for incitement - must be double figures for actually doing something surely! Get through the ignition and get her firing..... see how she is. Best of luck ;D John

and to the next installment of the theft of the car..... insurance and negotiations. I have deliberately not communicated with the insurance company about the car until I had it in my possession and their engineer had looked at it in the original condition Bruce and I picked it up in. So no documentation, keys, V5 etc have gone to them. I have only talked to them to report stolen and sort out recovery options as documented elsewhere in this thread. Well last Monday their bloke came and looked at it and we had a chat through damage I knew about, history of car, spec, unique paint and spec etc... He was an older chap so knew about Viva's etc actually played with Escorts etc in his early days as he worked for Ford. Got a letter Saturday morning from the insurance with an offer. The number jumps straight out. Yippee ;D. hang ON it says... " The engineer confirms that the vehicle is damaged beyond economical repair.
Subject to validation of doc and or MIAFTR clearance, we would be prepared to offer the sum of £2500 in settlement of the claim under the policy, subject to the excess £50. Payment will be subject to the salvage becoming Underwriters property, and less any amount due to any hire purchase company.
Please confirm your agreement to the above valuation." Looks like a pretty standard letter. So it is negotiation time. My stance is - I want to keep the vehicle and I would like a reasonable amount to repair the damage done to it. Where do I start? Thoughts, advice, ideas as to what I reply with? Is there any good resource out there to help with this sort of thing?

If you are happy with the figure, tell them you accept but wish to keep the car. Scrap value can't be more than £250.

^what she said. Shouldn't be a massive pile of effort beyond "I wish to retain salvage rights/ownership". At least with the older, sensible chap, you've been spared the part of negotiations where you bring it up from £350 to that £2.5k settlement!

OH! I am getting to complicated Am I allowed to request the engineers estimate? Why would that be needed - it's written off based on spares avaliability etc etc Just say you don't accept their offer - you want to keep the car so could they revise their offer based on the salvage value being retained by yourself See what they come back with

Always refuse the 1st offer anyway :-) But if you are broadly happy with the offer, go back and say you want the offer and the car, and they probably wont mind.
Mine was worth much less, but they gave me back the car for free just by me asking.

Worth asking them for the engineers estimate of the repairs and the Pre Accident Value (PAV) as the category is dependant on these figures.
General rule is if the repairs exceed the PAV then it's a Cat C. If repairs are less that PAV it is a Cat D. However if repairs are less than 50% of PAV, it can be deemed as being uncategorised as per the code of practice.
