Hi All, Would like to say thanks for all the good comments that came my way after the car was half inched. Well the car has been found in a scrappy and after over 3 weeks of not being able to get at it as the police buggered about. I got a look today. The good news is. It is not as bad as it could be the bad news is it looks like the engine is mullered as it is behaving like an oil colander. Hence this Post.. Has anyone got a car trailer I could borrow or their time and a trailer. It is costing me 20 pound a day and I have not come to an agreement with the insurance company yet. Ewan More details here... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=stln&action=display&thread=108274

Having never dealt with a stolen car before......and just talked to the the insurance 'claims handler'
1 Insurance saying that they will pay storage until an engineer looks at it and decides on damage category. After this they will then move it to their storage where it will be delivered to me 'free of charge'. On the proviso it is a cat c or d.
2 do I do this or do I get it home and get the engineer to come to to my house.
My head says 1 but I do not believe they will deliver.
My heart says 2. The main drawback would be I am putting a lot of people out to get it home.

Do not let the insurance company anywhere near. To say it will be a major ball ache to get it back off them is a major understatement, considering they're talking about write off categories, before they've seen it says it all. To them it's only an old Viva, worth the grand total of 20p. Get it back to your place and try to put it somewhere awkward for them to get to. I can't remember who it was, but I've read somewhere they simply came and took a car away one morning while the owner was at work, after saying it was a CAT D. That's what I'd do anyway.

Get it home. You've found it once and you don't want to lose it again just because of someone's opinion and you're not there in person to argue the case.
I expect people will gladly help because of the situation. I don't know you but am only a few miles from Chelt, so if you need a hand shoving it on a trailer and I can make it, then the offer's there.

What they said!
Once it's home and safe, negotiating with the insurance company is just a minor detail ;D

Agree with above. Get it home. I've heard nasty stories about car’s being “miss treated” at insurance yards. It’ll end up with more bumps and scrapes then the thieves gave it. While you know where it is, go collect it and park it on your drive behind another car if you can. Its nice to have it back but now you’ll gave to deal with all the political rubbish. Good luck with it all and glad to hear she’s been found, I a way you are a very lucky man indeed as it could have been much worse.

Yay for being found..
as to above comments, don't let it go the insurers, heard to many horror stories as they just assume it'll be scrapped..
get it back yourself, if you have to pay storage, pay it and then claim it all back..
assess the work and see if you 'really' want to claim, i know its a ballache, but if you stand to loose out/break even then do you really want the car as a future cat C etc???
I hope it gets sorted for you either way

at present with the engine still intact and not running its impossible to say anything about its condition other than "condition unknown".
the oil being half inch over full means little, petrol engines don't suffer as badly from over filling as diesels, in fact a lot of the e30 boys run a quart extra oil in their track cars to prevent oil starvation on left handers.
