i've just had a guy offer to buy my GTE off me. I bought it blind off eBay, and it turned out to be a bit of a turkey - needs far more welding that I imagined for a start.
I paid £530, he's offered £250 plus a L-plate Pug 306, taxed and tested till November. The GTE is up on axle stands and I've really lost heart in it...... I reckon if I sold the pugga I'd stand to make my money back and be a little bit wiser for the next time i get the eBay trigger finger.
Took his number to think it through but I think I'm going to give up on my dream of a GTE ragtop this year, and give him a bell. It's nice that he's got a load of cash to get a garage to do it properly though.

if its a diesal it will make considerably more than £200, also, the 1.4s are popular with young drivers and therefore make above the odds, but watch out for the 1.6 and 1.4 gearboxes, they are shonky.

it's a 1.4 povo-spec, but fairly neat and tidy apart from a dinged wing - regulation metallic dark blue though so wings a plenty in the breaker. will check the gearbox before doing the deal, thanks for that

waste of time f********ing chump! agreed to give me £300 plus his 306, which is a bit more dented than i thought but still worth £250 on ebay. has the car for all of 3 hours to take it to get a quote for welding (i've not got the cash, but i've still got the V5 for the Astra).... comes back wanting his car back as he can't afford the £400 i've already told him it'll cost to get it sorted. he thought he was gonna get mate's rates from his welder pal, looks like he's not such a good friend after all since it's the same price I got quoted from a regular garage! i know legally it's a done deal but we've still gotta swap £300 for the V5, and round here people tend to have some big friends so i've got an Astra back LOSER! grrr

The world's full of wazzocks like this, unfortunately. Best ones are the folk who travel from -some distance away- then want you to knock off £500 cos they think they have you over a barrel. It's a long walk back to the train station, and it's (*points*) that way. HAR HAR! Cash rooles in these situations.

What a f***ing tw*t of the worst kind. i'd have said 'OK then mate, no probs, hang on a sec' and hurriedly booted in all the panels on 'my' 306 before cheerfully offering him the key.
TOSSER.

i doubt he'll last long... it's got no brake fluid in it and i might forget to mention it.
the other alternative is that he tried to swap his 1.4 306 0.005bhp insurance over onto a GTE Cabrio, in a high risk area, and they laughed at him.

thread ressurection! wandering up the road at the weekend, noticed that the 306 is sat in one of the carparks with a few funny bits of engine underneath.... looks like a cover and a few clips and stuff. thought nothing of it. yesterday as I passed, there's a van next to it and a guy under the bonnet. looks to be sitting a bit high too so i squeeze a peek at what he's doing. Head is off, most of the top end of the engine is on the floor of the van and from the state of the cylinder block, i can only assume he snapped a cam belt. HA! KARMA! Cheered me right up. My GTE's still not going but at least it's not worth more as scrap
