Tell me about them
Basicly got a call today, asking if I want one with SOME tax, and about 6 months MOT.
It's cheap, and has low miles. A private plate, not immaculate, but OK, 2 owners from new...
Don't know what they are worth, what they are like to run etc etc....
Is there money to be made in these?, or are they "peanuts" mercs?
Forgot to add, apparently its loaded with all the toys.

The 6-bangers aren't as sought after as the V8's, but you can pick up pretty much any of the W126 saloons for peanuts. If it's a good 'un and the price is right, I'd say do it! Wouldn't buy one to make a profit on though as I don't think there's much to be made on them. Do I sense a bit of a Merc theme going on at Cappuccino Towers?! ;D

how much is "peanuts"? Basicly, this one appears to be a hunni, and its REALLY cheap. There's always been a merc undertone at Cappuccino Towers , just I need something at the moment, and this fits the bill.. the idea is, to use it, put some wires on it, then remove the wires and sell it to fund the rather rusty W115 I have here...

A W126 SE or SEL would make a fantastic cheap luxury car to own and use.
They are very well built and have amazing levels of luxury (electric reclining rear seats anyone?).
By now they have pretty much run their depreciation curve and can be picked up for a few hundred pounds.
I would consider buying one to use for myself but I wouldn't attempt to buy one to sell on at a profit
Any W126 Merc can be run cheaply (except for fuel economy) as most parts are available from ECP or german and Swedish and there are many sat in breakers yards or on Ebay etc......there are even a few dedicated MB breakers (such as Dronsfields etc).
In my experience the 80s Mercs are bulletproof and certainly the best built, but they do (like most other cars of that era) rust. Strangely they seem to rust from the inside out so when you see rust bubbles appearing (front wing are usually the first to go!) the rust has worked all they way through the metal and Will need chopping out!
Hope this helps!

My mechanic services a 88 300SE with 320K on it, the guy whos owns it could afford any car he wants but reckons Merc haven't built a car as good as the W126 since the end of production.

I agree, the W126 was the last of the Mercs built up to a (very high) quality, rather than down to a price. Really amazing little touches like fibre optics to illuminate the gear selector... something special for a car conceived in the late '70s / early '80s! ;D
