This isn't retro, but I have absolutely no idea what to do , having tried every organisation I can think of with nobody seeming to care.
Basically somebody has illegally registered their car at my address (03 Megane). I have not received a V5C, but I have got 20-odd parking tickets, a CCJ confirmation and numerous baliff letters/visits for unpaid fines.
I have tried the DVLA local office, local police and parking authority but they don't seem interested - the police even going as far as saying that I was breaking the law by opening the mail.
However as a small bonus i've now got his tax reminder. Does anybody know if this is multi use? My thinking is that if it is i'll just SORN it as soon as he pays the tax, meaning he'll get picked on the many ANPR cameras in the city centre where he parks.
Other than that it'll boil down to wandering round the city centre one day see if I can spot it and write it off.

Can't believe everyone has just fobbed you off tho, surly it's in their intrest to sort it?!?

the police even going as far as saying that I was breaking the law by opening the mail. . jokers, had a similar response from local council re unpaid council tax for a previous tenant, you try and do them a favour and they shove it back in your face. my suggestion would be .... find the higest person in each organisation thats shown no interest in resolving it, send a private and confidential for addressee only signed for letter stating the facts, complaining about lack of assistance from staff etc, just to get it on file somewhere ready for if the bailiffs knock good luck with it dude

do the parking tickets give you a good idea of where he will be knocking about?

You will need to quote the reg mark, your name and address, explain that you are receiving fine/s for vehicle you don't own and request confirmation that the address is removed.
You should get confirmation within 4 weeks. Also write to the police stating that you have no knowledge of the vehicle. They may want copy of the letter you get back from DVLA, sent them a photocopy and keep the original.

you have the reg number right? you could sorn the thing at a post office and then inform the police about an untaxed vehicle, but I don't know if thats the best way to go about things. if its registered at your house you could request a new V5c, as the letter warning the current owner that a new v5c has been requested will turn up at your door the request will go un-contested.... ;D (should have added a wink here as I was joking but missed it out, I wouldnt really advise doing this hence the ....) On a more serious note, you might be able to check to see where its last mot was done, the garage may give you a contact number if you can give them the time/day and the reg, or possibly even the house it was picked up from/dropped off to if they are a place that do collection/return. also use the reg number to look up what it is on the dvla site and the askmid. have you tried contacting your local traffic police or the vehicle crimes unit directly?

Terrible advice! Why would you want to register a car that you don't own. You'd certainly be liable for any fine then! Anyway, really not a subject for discussion here. May I recommend to search / ask advice on this one - forums.pepipoo.com/

it was intended as a joke but i didnt really make it clear, I missed the smileys off in my over tired state. your right its not something worth doing, but after previous talk on here about re registering cars I though it would be amusing, evidently not, and not really a place to be making jokes. comment retracted. and yes as above the pepipoo forums are very useful for things like this, there is a lot of good legal advice on there.

Put everything in writing so you have a form of proof. Might be worth sending registered/signed for too. If there's a court address on the CCJ letters, write to that. I've no idea about this but a thought makes it's way across the brain cell about credit ratings and such: addresses used to get noted, don't know if still the case. Write to central DVLA, the kops. Council too, if poss to to work out a dept to contact.

Do the sorn thing, classic.
I'm guessing they give you a week or so to return the tax disc for a refund as well, so, as the owner doesn't know, he'll lose 6 or 12 months pennies and then be picked up!
Brilliant...

Wouldnt this be a case of fraud? in which case contact the relevant authoriies within the police and ask them why a vehicle is registered at your address that has nothing to do with you.

When it was registered, then you should have gotten some confirmation (the V5 etc). Surely they've intercepted your mail, thats illegal isn't it?

But if it is in there name they have every right to collect the letters. If your local cops don't listen try going into a different station and asking them. We have had bailiffs call round to take goods to pay unpaid utility bills from the previous tenants. We where able to get rid of them by showing proof of ID (driving licence) and the rent book. Obviously you don't want them continuing so try DVLA direct and in person as they are worse than useless on the phone.

Simply write on the envelope of all correspondence "not known at this address" and put it back in the post box. DON'T open any post not addressed to yourself. Not returning the post is telling the senders the person who it's intended for is actually receiving it ! DON'T sorn or anything else - just ignor as it's not addressed to yourself (unless it's identity theft ie someone is using your name as well). You will find it very difficult to stop correspondence unless you return the post unopened.

It might also be worth checking the electoral role to get contact details as these companies are getting the information from somewhere... The other person may still be registered at the house... Id do it the legit way as stated above with the relivent dvla address.
Anything else will just get you in the sh*T.
If the cops are whinging about you opening mail. Think what they would be like if you cashed in someone elses tax!
One of those cases where you have to hope that doing the right thing gets you somewhere. As trying to be crafty will get you bent over.

As above, don't open the letters, it is illegal to open someone elses mail, send them back as unknown at this address. As for the ones you've received and opened, are the "parking tickets" from the local council or a private parking company? My guess is a private company, in which case they are trying it on and will get bored eventually. Pepipoo has a lot more about this as mentioned above.

Send the DVLA a letter explaining that you have never owned this vehicle, include a daytime contact number for them to contact you should they need to, remember to send this letter RECORDED DELIVERY, as if you don't the DVLA will throw it straight in the bin.
Explain that you have received a number for fines e.t.c that you are not liable for and you need the situation to be sorted out ASAP.
Once the DVLA get their arses into gear the car will show up as having no registered keeper and should get pulled by an ANPR police car, and the car will be crushed with the driver still inside. Problem solved!

go and rent an '03 megane and get some plates made. then go through as many speed cameras as you can find. 11/10 for retardedness. all the letters with go to matts home address personally, id do as compo said, bung em all back in the post marked not known, write to dvla and expain the car belongs to no one at that address, and then forget about it.

I had a similar nightmare with a happy ending. Read about it here: www.torqueitalia.net/forum/threads/1408-Marston-s-High-Court-Enforcement-Office-amp-Certified-Bailiffs?highlight=C180In summary, ring the DVLA in Swansea and ask to speak to someone in the SC2 area. That's the special investigations group. Everything else is a complete waste of time. Ask me how I know I just had a rummage around the archives and the fax number for SC2 is zero one seven nine two three eight four zero three five. The lady I dealt with was Sarah and she was very helpful but unfortunately I can't find a number for her. In any case, I had to fax them a statement denying that I'd ever owned the vehicle along with any supporting documentation, copies of the fines and in my case bailiff notices that arrived. Because it had got Bailiff stage I had to notify the court that issued the fines as well using form TE3 and form TE9. It's also worth calling the Association of British Insurers. They were interested in it from a fraud perspective. Hope this helps. cheers Jason
