Hello all,
the tailpipes (well the whole lot) on the merc are made of stainless, but have got rather dirty, as you'd expect from an exhaust...
What is the best way to get them shiny again?

You can get small brass wire brush is really good for chrome and alloy or even wire wool/ fine wet and dry for stubbon marks.

don't use anything abrasive on stainless ! once you damage the surface rust sets in. Use brasso to clean it if you don't have access to anything else

^ I think you're confusing stainless with chromed. Pure chromium alloy steel will is homogeneous and if you polish it off, it'll just passivate again and not rust. brasso is abrasive anyway, how do you think it works??
either that or you polished it with mild steel and what you're seeing is the mild steel left on it rusting.
