take off pcv valve, block off where it attatched to the intake. Extend the pipe by about a metre, shove someform of filter on the end (only to stop things going back up the pipe on the cool down cycle) and benefit from constant anti-rust reatment under the car

You're like a crazy backyard genius!

They don't have a PCV valve as standard - just a single hose from the rocker cover to the inlet, up-stream of the throttles - so in effect it's open end as standard.
The rocker box baffling is very basic and the actual hole only about 10mm so velocities are high, which means quite a bit of oil gets dumped in the inlet even when the engine is in good shape. (Breather dimensions are the same as used on 1300 engines!)
By adding a second big breather in the unused fuelpump hole and sticking a biggish can on it with a couple of stainless scouring pads in it, I'll give the pressure another, easier escape while (hopefully) retaining the oil. I could just vent that under the car as suggested but was hoping to go a bit further by actually getting the pressure a bit below atmospheric in the engine. Who knows - might stop the thing piddling oil out everywhere....

Though I will assume you were joking... You can try and add a second breather I guess, but it'd be far better to treat the cause than treat the symptom, before it gets much worse... Question, have you checked the breather box inside the rocker cover for obstructions? Iirc it's just a box filled with steel wool... Oil gets to the gunge stage and it blocks it up. Only effective way to fix that is to pull the wool out and change it.

There is no wool as standard - just a hole with a single plate over it about 3mm away. It aint clever. One reason I think I can improve on it. Agree on treating the cause - it will be done before too long, just not practical at this point. Also I'm still entertaining the faint hope that the rings are bit sticky after 15 years odd standing and will self heal (yeah right : Compressions are all 195 - 200psi so it goes ok - just smokey, fumey and swilling oil. Cheers Nick
