Definitely feel sorry for the guy and can sympathise, we've all bought stuff without actually sitting down and really thinking about it, or checking it out properly. Just proves that you can never buy a car on reputation or shiny pictures. Real shame tho.

Ouch, poor chap. There was a recent revolt in the air-cooled VW Scene a few years ago now which has turned into it's own little monster. Some of you might be familiar with rusty old beetles and busses slammed to within an inch of their life, narrowed beams, polished wheels etc. The main reason a lot of VW people were buying and rolling these vans and bugs was to prove that they weren't just plodded over snotters and "show queens" but things got a bit out of hand IMO and now people drive positively dangerous heaps to prove how "hard core" they are. While I've got a lot of time for an honest beaten up old car, (I've had a fair few, still do), there's always a part of me that wants to sand it down and paint it.. as uncool as many of my air-cooled VW Bretheren may see me, I like shiney cars.. there, I said it.. Anyhoo I digress. I'd be very wary of who I commision to restore anything of mine, I like to see their work and watch them doing it if I can, I know that Larry at Retro Custom (for example) is meticulous when he's working on a car, and I'd gladly buy one of his builds knowing it'd be spot on. However, there are some in the VW World who are respected and I'd not go to, as I've seen cars of theirs with body vents sunk in under self tapping screws, loads of filler work covered in well applied paint, bolts finger tight and even engines that when taken apart don't have the parts the customer paid for inside . If I'm buying an unknown restoration, regardless of how well it's known, I'd want to inspect it very closely indeed, or at the very least I'd want a lot of build up photo's. One of the reasons that these forums are such a valuable resource are the readers rides sections and the build threads, at least people can see what's gone into a car then and they've got some background into how much has gone into a car.

I love the car and "there but for the grace of god goes I" applies!
I'd probably have bought it without checking for filler in the roof etc.
I hope it gets redone. I'd be tempted to go see the shell if its really "going for scrap" although a new roof and rear quarters would cost a fair wedge to have properly fitted. The list of places I'd trust to do a roof graft is short indeed....

Gutted for the guy. Previous owners must take some responsibility for the cars shocking body work, especially the previous owner who had done the floor. 12.5k wow

That would definitely put me into the 'personal retribution rage' on my annoyance scale..... feel terrible for the guy - truelly. I've had a couple of 'dodgy' repairs done by pros - but only a couple and nothing to lose too much sleep over - I think it'd be my GF that would be on the sellers doorstep blood-letting after I told her how much I'd spanked on a pile of bog ;D
Another reminder of why I haven't paid over £500 (and that was a Lexus!) for any of my lot other than OB's bus/transpporter build up - and we all saw that!
I hope the guy can salvage something from this.......

It concerns me that I could have accidentally found myself on the other side of this kind of situation, assuming the role of unscrupulous seller. My wife and I bought a 328i Sport last year; it wasn't great, we didn't really like it, so we decided to sell it quite quickly. I advertised it on here, and could very well have ended up selling it to an R-R user. It was only when a number of interested (and fastidious!) BMW enthusiasts came to look at it that we realised how very many things were wrong with it. I'd have felt awful if I'd sold that to someone on here; indeed, if I'd sold it to anyone on the understanding that it was tired but basically OK, rather than fundamentally terrible. The subsequent, scrupulously honest advert saw me taking a massive loss, and then still nearly being taken to court by the buyer. Not nice. You just never know, do you? Here it is in its natural habitat: ...and again: I'm unsurprised to find that the DVLA now lists it as 'unlicensed'.

Good point dbizzle, the knee-jerk reaction is to assume foul play by the seller but it's not always the case.

The rear floors are rotten and painted over, the roof panel is attached at the drip rails by filler only, there are a series of "unspecified" mechanical botches alluded to. Rear quarters full of filler, some metal somewhere welded sporadically on 2 sided and wobbled with filler to hide it...
If it's as bad as the current owner describes I'm amazed it's not fallen apart by now as it's been driven hard for a long time

Has anyone seen all these faults?
Not wanting to tar anyone, but so far it does just appear the buyer doesn't have a clue about spigots and nuts, the wheel fell off and is just having a right old go at the seller???

To be fair he doesn't seem to be having a go at the seller. And I'd be peeved if someone sold me a car where the rear wheels weren't bolted on properly (spigots or no, the studs were too long for the dome nuts and you'd hope this was checked when the axle was redone)
The rest of it seems to be stuff that's hidden away for years.
With stuff like this you have to wonder - it's obviously not right but it's held up like that for years...
But once you spot it, you would want to fix it...
I understand someone is off to look at it sometime about now as he's buying some parts off the owner

It's a shame he's found all these problems as I've seen the car in the tin a few times over the years and it gave the impression of being a straight and well sorted car.

I'm mildly dubious! If this car is so well known, i'm sure someone who can sniff out a bodge, would have flagged it up by now if it was such a terrible wobbed/riveted-up deathtrap. they're not exactly a Honda NSX are they, I mean they're fairly low-tech, including the body shell. Does anybody know when it last had some bodywork?
I would be gutted too to have forked out 12500 and still be looking at a sh**load of work before I had a decent car, but then again I have no idea what these are worth.... if I bought an XK150 for 12500 I presume it would by default be a major league 'project'.

For £12500 I'd expect it to have been as good as it looked.
It's not a '68 Charger so doesn't carry quite the premium they do.
Monsieur Testicles is not the first to be surprised it's never been noticed to be a wob job in all these years it's been "out"
One of it's previous owners is still keen to buy it back...
