I need to replace the rear discs and pads on my Mk3 Golf GTI. Can anyone recommend the best tool / method to wind back the caliper pistons? If I recall, some Mk2 Golf GTI calipers could be done with a big Allen key, but the calipers on mine have a different piston with two cut-outs near the edges. I've seen various tools on eBay but I thought I'd ask here in case any of you guys had any recommendations or tips.

Every car I've had to do brakes on I've loosened the bleed nipple and taken the cap off the cylinder bottle and either just used my hands or for really tough ones, a G-clamp.

If your not planning on doing it often one of these types will do the job for about a £5er

Thanks fellas. I did think about using a G-clamp but I'm not sure if the thread on the pistons are left- or right-handed. Plus if there's a chance it'll damage the caliper I might as well get a proper tool.

for golo ones with the notches in the edge of the piston, ive always just used a bit of flat plate that slots in the holes thats cut to length. if they don't easily wind by hand with that they're borked anyway..

On my old S12, I wound the caliper back in using the locking tool from an angle grinder

Indeed, G clamps muck up up the threads within the caliper on rear items (most have the handbrake mechanism built within the caliper). Like most I use a caliper rewinding tool, and for the fronts I push them in with an old pad using the tool. I could use a G Clamp but it does seem easier with the tool and old pad. As other have said, a crowbar's ends or pliers can also do the job, it depends on how much fiddliness you can put up with (this depends very much on the condition of the calipers IME and how badly the pads are worn.). Are you in Leicester ever? If so, if you could meet up halfway I could loan you mine .

I forgot to update this. Thanks for all the advice, and Chas, thanks for the offer mate! In the end I went and bought a caliper wind-back tool set. Not that expensive and will come in handy (I like buying tools! ;D) Not used it yet, but tomorrow I will be. Let's hope the calipers aren't sh*gged!

I used a pair of pliers for the ones on the MR2! If they aren't seized up and you remove the reservoir lid it should be reasonable easy.

golf calipers are near identical to my 405, just a large screwdriver did the trick. its all i ever use even though i do have a wind back tool!
the tools hardly fit most calipers anyway :/

Well, I used the wind-back tool today and I have to say, it made the job really nice and easy! I'd be worried about stabbing the dust seal by using a screwdriver but other people may be less clumsy! ;D

Halfords do a wind back tool if you want one off the shelf. I've used a big pair of needle nose pliers in the past.

both the methods i use have been mentioned in this thread.... thin nosed pliers and a (modified!) pin spanner (normally used for locking angle grinders!)
I probably should buy the propper tool, but to be honest, they always wind back easy enough with one of the above....
