right just had the weber fitted onto the golf. problem is i don't have the right air filter for it. now the chap said it was fine to drive witout it. is he right? how long can i get away with without a filter?
more importantly, what filter do i need? maybe cappuccinocruiser can help me on this since i got the carb from him?
top carb though, makes a much nicer noise plus goes much better.

Assuming you're talking about the Golf then the original kit came with an adaptor to allow the Golf airbox to be fitted.

right the old airbox fits. just nothing to attatch it to the carb with. it used to attatch by a clip that went over it. there is 3 empty screw holes around the carb that could be used to hold the box on by putting the head of a bolt over the lip of the airbox. looks like ill do that then...

now the chap said it was fine to drive witout it. is he right? Not really. Suck in a bolt / stone and it'll cause all kinds of problems. You might get away with it but I wouldn't want to risk it for any length of time. If you're really stuck stick a sock or pair of tights over the carb - should keep the chunks of curse word out until you get a filter

I've been running the tina with no filter for a couple of years now. Its not really a good thing to do though. All the time the engine is sucking in air its also sucking in dust, grit, insects and all kinds of other curse word. All this is going into the engine and getting stuck in the valve seats, ground into the cylinder walls and carried away into the oil system and generally shortening the life of your engine. I don't really car as my engine is pretty knackered all ready but if you have any kind of love for that golf i'd stick a filter on it soon as

In the top of the airbox should be a hole with a rubber bung. On the carb should be a bracket sticking up c/w threaded section that lines up with bung-hole. The kit came with a allen bolt and top hat kind of thing to clamp airbox to bracket (and hence carb).
The original insructions are hosted by somebody on the Scirocco Register - I will try to find them later...

No problem. I scanned in the DMTL pages from the Haynes carb book, and somebody hosted them... but I have forgotten who, and lost the scanned files Apparently you can head to your nearest Weber agent with the part number.

BTW you can get a panel K&N for the airbox for about £30 from GSF etc. Whether worth it over std filter is another matter...
The Golf standard? One of those DMTL's is seeing over 120bhp on my Rocco, so they are pretty capable.

its done! thanks for everyones help. it was doing my swede in! the golf is totally standard engine wise (apart from the obvious weber). only replaced the carb since the old one had problems. also a massive thanks to cappuccinocruiser for supplying all the parts! when the mechanic was finished all the leftover parts were mixed up so i had no idea what came with the weber and what was leftover from the pierberg. one more question. whats this pipe do? the green one. it fell off and iv (my dads idea) temporarily replaced it with garden hose. it looks like it comes from the oil. is it important? what size is it normally? ok thats 3 questions...

half inch(?) black rubber hose normally. It's just a breather for excess pressure. Whatever fits will do IMO BTW that mount on the front of the airbox should tighten into the bracket fixed to the rocker cover

the airbox is now higher than it was before so it wont fit into that bracket. i already tried. it doesnt move around too much though so i guess ill leave it. i was going to attatch the airbox by that bracket on its own (before i learned of the top hat deely) but it pulled the box off the carb.
might see if i can get something to bridge the gap between the bracket and the mount at a later date.

Ahhh... refer to scanned page 2 on that link I posted - should be 2 threaded spacers that fit on the cam cover studs.

i just used a bit of that stereo fitting strap you can get to fit mine on my old 'rocco, stopped the airbox rattling around like a curse word.
