My girlfriend has been on about getting a BMW e30 for some time, and since she "modified" the Mk2 Golf GTI, she's been thinking more and more about getting one. However, I don't really know a lot about the engines - which are good, which are bad... that kind of thing.
A 325i is going to be too much to insure I reckon (especially since her NCD has now evaporated!). My brother (street) had a 316i which seemed fairly quick, but then I start thinking she might as well go for a 318i... or a 320i. I know the 318iS is sought after (and therefore probably out of price range) Just testing the water really, as I hope she'll at least keep the Golf over the winter - twisty wet country lanes aren't the ideal learning place for your first RWD car ;D

I'd go for a 318.
The 6 pots are a little more nose heavy, and she's less likely to "learn oversteer" in a 4 pot version.
they aren't roadburners, but they're not bad

You'll not go far wrong with an 1800. As long as it's not the pants pierburg-carb jobbie which is monumentally slow AND thirsty. My brother has run a 320i for the last 12months, and has been able to coaxe fairly sensible MPG out of it. He's now in a 318i, and recons it's not much slower and deffo less thirsty. But you don't get 'the noise'. What is your intended budget, or is that a silly question?

i've had or driven all of them, i still have 2 now.
my advice is go for a 318i, the 6 pots are good if you want to go faster and sound badass at the same time, but a 318i will fill the e30 void in your life and still provide adequate fun.

Thanks fellas. 318i sounds the way to go then! She'll probably keep the Golf for a while - it's had loads spent on it so might as well get some use out of it, but we saw a really clean dark metallic grey 320i slammed over some BBS cross-spokes on the weekend and it made both of us go ooooooooh!. Budget-wise, there is no appreciable funds at the moment, it would depend on what the GiT fetches really.
I had a go in my mates M325i some years back and that left me gobsmacked - unbelievable handling!
Another option on the table is a Capri, but I don't think it'd be fast enough for her unless she got a V6, and then we'd have insurance issues...

There's alot of very nasty ones out there. Just gotta tread carefully This is my bro's one, which we snaffled for £215 Hardly a mark on it
