Evening Dude Coilovers looking good ;D ref the blue plastic top spring mounts I would take the top one off and put the top spring perch off the 280 struts back on as this sits up against the bearing for the steering and takes the load of the front of the car, I trimmed mine down because the springs are a smaller diameter, I do plan on making up a proper spacer later. was there a bearing in there when you took it apart ? strange that oil filled strut to ? it would prob be better to chuck both of them and use mk1 golf inserts, I got some gas ones from GSF for about 20 quid, I ended sectioning my struts but all you need to do if you don't is find a bit of pipe that fits inside the strut and cut it down to fit as a spacer, Also you can use a bit of pipe split into to then welded back onto the strut to make the bottom stop for the adjusters If you need a hand just give me a shout Gary Hi mate, i was actually gonna message you about the top mounts. I'm still looking into options for the upper spring cups. Did you use the blue parts at all?? Got any pics of what you did?? The way i have it now it still runs on the bearings but just playing with it really. I may try MK2 Golf inserts as I'm not sectioning mine yet and they are almost the size of 280ZX inserts apparently!!?? Ive actually got some pipe cut down ready for making the lower spring perch.... more pics coming soon ;D Cheers

Cool I may pop down to GSF then I did notice in the above pic that the distance between the top of the spring and the top mounting bolts on yours is quite a lot, thats probably why you had to section your shocks to get low enough!? I'm trying to minimise this distance so I can run standard shock length.... Lets see what happens lol

MINI UPDATEI may of had a result today, but this depends if I can get these to fit!?!? I managed to get a pair of brand new uprated mk2f Polo front suspension inserts for free just because the guy had no use for them....... Hopefully I can make these fit my 280ZX Struts Length = 341mmDiameter = 46mm (Yes I know it doesnt look like it in the pics lol) Measured from base of insert to top of thread....... Fully extended = 515mm Fully Compressed = 400mmI havent yet compaired these to the single 280ZX strut I have but its worth a try for a freebee Ill try it when I go to my garage this week and let you know

ANOTHER UPDATEIve been doing a little bit more this week. First i managed to compare the MK2 Polo inserts to the Datsun 280ZX one...... And measured the 280ZX inserts.... So the Polo ones are a fair bit shorter and the body is slightly stepped and the last 1 1/2" doesnt quite fit in the Datsun strut! The only way I can think of making it fit is to slightly grind down that section of the insert down (I think the metal is really thick here and only a minute part needs removing!?). Ill worry about this later and I really want to try a full size MK2 Golf insert....... Does anyone have any measurements for one of these??Anyway I got one with prepping the rest of the coilover conversion ready for my mate to weld up for me. I had some pipe sections cut down to short sections and given to me for free from the scrap bin of a local fabricators ;D. These will become the new lower spring mounts that will be welded on. I put all the parts together loosely to measure out for the position of welding on the mounts, checking for clearence with the rims and the tyres with the coilovers wound right down...... Coilover and spring mount position before welding, showing clearence with 7.0J Watanabe wheels when wound fully down: Coilover and spring mount position before welding, showing clearence with 9.0J Enkei wheels + 20mm spacers when wound fully down: The complete coilover setup...... And I reconfigred the topmount assembly..... Twin bearing topmount setup using larger 280ZX with smaller 140Y on top...... Much better ;D Ive also prepped the rear coilovers ready for a little modification Stripped down...... This bush and mounting needs removing.... Choppy Choppy ;D Removed........ The top will have a threaded bar welded on so it will mount into the Datsuns rear turrets..... hopefully ;D TO BE CONTINUED..............

Nice work I'm currently looking into new front brakes... also rear disc conversion for the Baby Atlus that is going on the back. Yay for stopping! I'll let you know what the 280ZX front brakes are like once fitted. Looking at the size of them compaired to the B310 ones it should make quite a difference. I'm not going all out on mine as its not going to be a track car or anything. Just want better height adjustable suspension so I can get it sitting right and handelling a little better for a spritely B road jaunt, along with changing the tiny front brakes that wouldn't even embarass a mountain bike!! lol ........... then its onto the looks department with some subtle changes ;D

I always set mine at the lowest and go from there, you tend to find all the clearnce problems pretty quick then, but my cars always seem to stay that low then lol

On the rear you really need to add some strength to the top coilover mount. As its usually only the shock mounted there it won't have been designed to take any load. Just a piece of 3-4mm ish plate over the top and stitch welding the seams should be enough.

looks much better that height however I think I would of been inclined to off just got a new set of standard rear springs and chopped them further rather than fit springs and shocks of unknown age/origin/load rating etc. front set up looks good though

I copied the rear coilover conversion from someone else on the Datsun club that's has fitted mk2 escort ones in the same way with no issues! That top mounting area is actually very strong at that point so I've been told several times! Ill keep an eye on it tho!
I got the rear coilovers off BRATMAN on here and said he thinks they were off a ford of some sort but not overly sure! It's never gonna be a race car so I just want some sort of damping and easily change springs for height etc. u don't get much choice with these old cars! Still got to be loads better than chopping loads off some springs.
