I have a problem - it's a bit long-winded, but I try to included all infomation:
Good few weeks ago I bought a nice looking 1993 Audi 80 TDI from a mate of a mate, who was selling it for one of his mates (I know, good start).
Although it had done 185k miles, it looked basically well looked after, and been given a half-decent blow over. It was also cheap and I needed something in a hurry after somebody wrote off my Scirocco for me.
There was some vague back story about it being bought (for the decent bodywork) with a blown head gasket, but then it turned out to be something else - sure enough there was oil in water, but also a nice shiney new oil/water cooler block. Plus it started and ran just fine... can reach 100 (ahem... kph, obviously) and has been returning over 50mpg easily.
However after a few days it blew a 'bleb' in the oil filter seal, and emptied the sump all over the engine bay. I replaced it with a new (Mann) one, which lasted a week before severly leaking oil all over the place. Replaced that one with a Bosch filter which lasted about 500 miles before leaking (and also 'blebbed' when I tried to tighten it up). All the times it happened it was when the engine, and hence oil, was cold. Plus I was possibly revving it a bit the first coupe of times as live in a hilly area.
After that, decided to replace the oil/water cooler block as this appeared to be the last thing changed, with a supposedly OE one from Eurocarparts, along with another Bosch filter. It did appear though the old block wasn't very well stamped, leaving one area where the seal contact area was poor.
I have done over 1000 miles in past few weeks, with all sorts of driving, including giving it some beans from cold, with no problems. I thought I had sorted it.
However Saturday I used the car, left it for an hour or three, then set off on a motorway journey. After about 20 miles oil pressure light and buzzer came on, luckily just before a junction. Sure enough oil leaking past the seal again, though not flowing out as badly as last couple times (managed to limp to destination and back using about 2.5 gallons of oil! One Audi that will now never rust underneath...).
I think the next step is to replace the oil pump, which also contains the pressure relief valve (I think). But anybody have any other ideas? Really not looking forward to having to drop the sump...
BTW I was putting oil on the new filter seal, and mechanic F-in-L checked I was tightening the oil filters correctly.
Edit for speeling and granma
