Its been a while since i have done anything with the the firenza since its incident on the Fens last year with a wheel coming off, but in a few weeks I move once again but into a place with a garage so my thoughts turn back to the firenza.
I'm currently planning a build consisting of a 1256 with a small vw turbo and a single 45 jetted for an A series with a type 9 behind that and a capri axle for the final drive amoungst other things. Ive worked out most things including get all the low comp stuff i can find new and such like and after reading up on camshafts i worked out a 270 profile would be fine but then i thought when do i want the cam working at its "best" just before the turbo kicks in or as the turbo kicks in? Also how can i work out or find out when the turbo starts spinning up? I know alot of people will think why don't i put a redtop or v8 in the answer is simply i wanted to try something out and see if it works.
So can anybody help? For life of me the model of vw that it comes off escapes me but i know its a 1.3 diesel engine or similar, if anybody can refresh my memmory that would handy too.

I was under the impression that diesel turbos don't like being run at petrol exhaust temps and melt PDQ.
also I thought that cams made f-a difference with a truboas by the time the cams are workign the turbo is on boost so your in-ex pressures are messed up anyway.

I had thought about this but Found this one lying around so thought I would use it but am considering the other turbo options..
I am not sure if it messes it up or not, I was thinking if the cams opend up just before boost then it would work, ill keep looking and searching!

with your cam choice, make sure you have as little overlap as possible, or all the charge air flies right out the exhaust.

All the mini guys seem to have great success from ditching the standard metro turbo for a gt17, might be worth a look, or maybe seeing how similar the turbo you have is dynamically.

I'd personally stick with an OE N/A cam to begin with - get all the niggles of the installation sorted first... then go for a turbo-specific cam and whilst it may "get it running" having a carb jetted for another type of engine, obviously won't do you any favours for power/economy/general running. SU carbs have proven time and time again to do the job exceptionally well for small blown engines and a turbo from a 1.3 TD, will be EXTREMEMLY undersized for a 1.3 petrol. I'd be suprised if it gave any noticeable boost in power. Look more for a turbo from a 1.9Td, it'll be closer in terms of required size... but finding one from a 1.3-ish petrol would obviously be the better option. Sell the turbo to go towards a "turbo-fund" ?

I think it might be time to sell the turbo as I found its from an 1.4 VW Polo made in 2004. So from what has been said it might best not to run the 45 and the turbo but go down the SU route and a bigger turbo or one from a petrol...
What would the ideal setup be for the engine then?? I have no clue where to start to get the jetting for a 1256 firenza...

that's the best part of an SU - you don't have to choose from a plethora of different jets, tubes, etc,all at a few £each... You'd not go far wrong with the standard metro turbo needle
As for what needle would be "best", is anyones guess.. but find a rolling road that deals with minis, and they'll get you sorted!
