That sounds like a bad connection. My first step would be to remove the main lead battery +VE to starter motor assuming negative earth at the starter motor end. Clean it with some wet and dry and do the same to the post it conects to. Then refit and see if it makes a difference.

No starter lead doesn't get hot but there is a click and fizzing sound from the negative side of the battery once and a while that sounds ominous, I would be looking there, make sure the connections are all supa clean and maybe stick a bit of vaseline on em. I'd probably do the same on the engine earth strap for good measure, as advised above by popular children's author Dick King-Smith above.

What starter ? the large early or the late geared starter, TBH 90% of the time its the starter burning out and the fizzing is the battery fluid boiling under the neg terminal as the starter sucks the life out of it and overheats it, let it cool for a while and it'll be back to full capasity and spin like a mofo but as the easy route i allway say clean the connections first as it's the easy thing to do and when diagnosing you allways start with the easy stuff first.

Or like the sedona which l fixed at the weekend the solinoid contacts in the starter are had it, which is common for nippon starter motor you can get kit from ebay to replace them, so maybe your van is the same curse word design starter motor.
