Its the bane of any moderatly successful website. I've got 2 gigs of transfer each month,.. so far this month (I'm not sure when a month starts and ends) the site has transfered 2.5 gigs. Thats been with me going easy on spreading the galleries around the net etc.
It will calm down, but I think it will go crazy again next summer (galleries during show season are a big draw),..
I've been thinking of doing 3 things,..
a) Get another 2 gigs of transfer per month (£7 a month/£84 a year (inc VAT)),..
b) Move all the images to a box that a friend has in Telehouse with no bandwidth restrictions. Only problem is all the gallery links and images linked on forums etc. will break. The gallery is easy to fix, but all the externally linked images will be broken.
c) Disallow external image linking, this really is the bandwidth leech. This is a bit of a double standard as we use other peoples images all the time on this forum. So it would be a touch rude.
Hmmm,....

How about getting some support from us lot, in the same way that VZi did a year or so ago.
I would be more than happey to send some money to help maintain this forum, as it has become a fun and valuable resource to me. I am sure that others would agree.
There are probably 20 or so daily users. If we each put in some subs, the site could financially run itself. Just a tenner from each of the regulars would save you from being out of pocket, and keep the bandwidth issues at bay for at least the next year.
Do any others agree?

Thanks for the offer,.. I'm always a little uneasy about people donating money to keep websites up and running. If it did happen, I'd be morally obliged to do some more stuff on the site. Another resource or two and improve the PCD search. Just as a thank you. But now I've thought of doing that, I'll probably end up doing it anyway

Nice idea about subs. I use the brickboard (massive volvo resource) and it has saved me so much money that a donation is worth every penny.
Where do we post the dosh to Hotwire?

Do you pay for a fixed amount of bandwidth (data transfer) a month wether it's used or not? So if you pay for 3bg and only 2gb gets used you loose the remainder?

yeah I'm paying fixed bandwidth costs. It won't matter so much after show seasons is over with,.. so I may just see how it goes in the next month or so,.. before coming begging. I just reduced my bandwidth problems a bit by moving the logo for this board from the RR server to my other server. For information, the most popular images are (in order): (that just caned the bandwidth some more ),..

If you were going to do subs you would have to make everyone do it - some people may see that paying for non-paying folke would be unaceptable!
Could we try and use smaller images everywhere?
By the sounds of it we've got a few issues to try and resolve - any thoughts on the calendar re-design? I've got a few suggestions if you'd like to hear them...........!

My sites on a pay as you go kind of hosting so I just log in an top up occasionally. It's good because if it has a quiet month I only pay for what it uses. Don'yt know how cost effective it'd be with this forum though. BTW... I WANT THESE WHEELS!!;D ;D

Sure bung me a mail,.. its on the list of things to do,.. A lot of places do things donations based, like www.b3ta.com and Volkszone. Usually it means that the person gets a nice comment under their name on the forum, like "VZi Sponsor", or on b3ta you get a little icon next to your name. If I had worth while content on the site I'd do a subs based site (cheap sub like tenner a year),.. but then I don't think its up to it, and it is also a whole different route to the direction I was going down. Damn the man and his bandwidth!!!! We'll think of something.

Just a thought on raising some revenue for more webspace: How about a bit of merchandising - you know windscreen sitckers, t-shirts etc. You could make a little bit of profit on these, and it would help us to recognise each other at shows and when pooting about etc.

I might start a thread later today asking others for suggestions.
It might also help if people sent me a mail / PM for calendar events. I can catch most of the common ones from mags / websites, but the little local ones are hard to find out about.

Don'yt know how cost effective it'd be with this forum though. Believe it or not that bandwidth doesn't include this forum. This is hosted elsewhere with a free provider (this the ads at the top of the pages). It is purely the galleries it seems. I knew they would be a big bandwidth user, didn't realise how much though. Oh well we'll see. BTW... I WANT THESE WHEELS!!;D ;D They are Lotus wheels NickB, stickers are coming. I've been thinking about apparel as well just got to see how much it would be for initial outlay.

Yeah, another thumbs up for merchandising here too. Just think the "Retro Rides skinny bloke retro style T-shirt" could be next years must have accessory at the RCS!! There would be people queuing up to get them. I'd be happy to pay £15 for a £10 T-shirt. I don't want to see the forum die.

I'd say that merchandising is the way to go.
Sorry, I'm computer illiterate, do you mean a limit on how much you can transfer to the net from your PC and vice versa? If so, did you know that this NTL Broadband like the one I use doesn't have any limits like that. Maybe you could transfer to a similar limitless system eventually? They do your telly channels through digital too while they're at it, as opposed to cable/satellite.

I'm pretty likely to be pubbing it tonight with a mate who had a load of "tour" t-shirts made up for us all for a Newquay trip a couple of years back. I'll have a word, and see what can be done. I'm trying hard to conevrt him to the cause at the mo' - He quite fancies the idea of a retro mini........
