At my last job a new lad joined the team. He was pleased as punch because the new role gave him enough money to buy a car. The next month I see him driving into the parking bay with a rough-as-you-like Vauxhall Corsa. He complained to me that it cut out on bends and he couldn't work out why. He pops the bonnet and I take a look. The previous owner had replaced the OEM battery with the smallest lead acid I've ever seen (something like an 061) and secured it into the void of the tray by wedging a housebrick between the battery casing and inner wing. When matey took a right hand corner the battery slid around on the tray and popped off the terminal because it hadn't been tightened up. The brick fragment later fell out as he drove home that night Needless to say I borrowed* a suitable battery from a 'just in' 1400 Corsa for him the next time I was in my local scrapyard. *In fact I 'paid' for said magnificent mud caked Varta by means of the latest issue of Loaded. That's what the bloke in the yard asked for - I had no cash on me at the time.

I have seen a couple of bodges.
The Midget I had featured a spanner wedged in between the starter and the body. The PO said he had it started a week before I came to see it and the ignition barrel snapped. When I came to start it, I thanked my dad for spotting the spanner wedged in. With the battery literally on the other side of the bulkhead to my face, that would have been a pleasant experience. Thanks PO...
It also featured crappy washers to keep the wheels on tight (which were an abysmal attempted TBH (he bought the car originally I found for its steering wheel and wheels (Gold revolutions). Instead of buying spacers he wedged in a couple of spacers behind the wheel. That and the rear boot floors were made of underseal and body filler.
How I got that car running was amazing. But in hindsight maybe it was not so bad once I had the car running.

The bolt holding the steering column to the rack on my 1850 had been replaced by one that was less than half the diameter and double the length it should have been. It had been tightened up so much that it started to crease in the middle... When I tried to undo it, it snapped with next to no effort. Both front wings had front ends made of filler, 5" back on one side 3" back on the other. Pulled off the bumper to investigate what looked like a little bit of filler cracking. A little bit turning into most of the rear drivers side panel being made of filler. Oh, half the bolts from the bumper have been tightened without washers, so are now a permanent part of the rear panel, until I cut them out. There's more, but I can't remember right now.

Bae/Spirit aerosystems prestwick, bombardier bellfast, agusta westlands yeovil, GKN bristol, Maintenance at prestiwck airport etc Contractor so been a few places. They did a trial of an aircraft that wa completely stripped out ( think it was a 320, that had no fasteners on the skins just on the main frames, the cabin remained pressurised to soemthing like 15,000ft, the sealants they use is really good stuff, but some of it is just beyond dangerous !!! Yeah airbus are working on some really cool tech like lazer welding, electron beam welding and stir welding that doesn't use electricity, uses super high pressure under a spinning mandrel that literally stirs the two metals together, some really clever stuff. They're also trying to work out a way to weld titanium to aly! But this was a few years ago now, truck driving now back in the uk, got sick of the Saudi sun and getting shot at whenever we went off the base

I've just noticed some really bad grammar in my post My use of "used" looks totally wrong in some of that, but I'm not sure what would be correct?? Esp the bit "bought when I used to live in Wales, used as my daily..." That is wrong? Isn't it?? Would somone kindly tell me what the correct grammar would be?? tY grammatically acceptable, but clumsy. 'bought when I lived in Wales, used daily....' would sound better. Got an English teacher sat next to me atm. Thhank you, that does read better, say thanks to your teacher friend too

I would say this hobby would be better if.... some pixies tidied up for me. I seem to spend half my life putting shizzle away in the garage lol.... My problem is the pixies hide my shizzle. I spend half of any job looking for the parts, spanner, keys, mug of tea, etc. I had in my hand 30 seconds previously. Thank god for that, I thought it was me losing my mind. ;D ;D Thanks for sharing that I feel much better now.

ive lost count of the bodges I've seen, mostly on customers cars... (i worked in a garage attached to a breakers yard.. so got some real junk in to repair)
on my own beetle when someone had snapped a framehead bolt, and instead of removing the broke bit, had 'welded' (i use that term loosely) a bit of threaded rod to it, it snapped when i went to undo it ¬_¬ same car has a catalog of bodges.. i still have it but I'm on the lookout for a less bodged shell to restore...
not one i saw in person, but was featured in some mot magazine was a car presented for a test with a snapped off track rod end 'welded' back on with some of the worst welding i've ever seen

If I hadn't have been at my mates garage at the time , I wouldn't have believed this one ...This Transit came into his place a couple of years ago . Chap had needed an axle so another garage ( not my mates ..) said they'd sort it out for him .. ^ yep , only one shoe 'fitted'.. The other side had no shoes at all fitted - quality job.
