Morning all been hunting a clunking sound in the polo (mk 3) for a week. Sounded like it was coming from underneath/rear left and, as the exhaust is a bit leaky, I assumed it was related. Turns out it was the front left strut top If you bounce the car the strup top moved upwards a small amount with an audible clunk. Nothing has been fiddled with or altered - is this some sort of cup/bearing failure? I've not stripped front suspension down to that degree as of yet - so I don't know what the design/make-up is. I've got some new shocks/springs on the way - was hoping to use the original strut tops... Cheers! Tim

Top mounts are knackered, they're not expensive. If you're putting new springs and shocks on fit the whole lot at the same time. It won't just suddenly fall to bits if it's only just started.

Yep, what Matt said, they're a common failure on Polos, if you've got a GSF local they'll probably work out about the same price from there once you take into account postage. You can get lowered ones which mount the spring a little higher giving you 10-15mm more drop, but I'm a bit out of date with Polo's, so I'm not sure where you can get them now.

Standard is fine as got lowering springs and shocks on the way :-)
GSF is a while away - but local parts place is quick and helpful so don't mind paying few quid more.
Cheers all!

BTW - found this out whilst asking in dealer today:
This part is now obsolete - VW have 6 left at the factory - and they are ~£35 each!

I dunno what Polo ones are like, but it was the same thinking I had on a BMW one that 4 miles up the road punched its way up into the bonnet.

Albeit a rear one. Bang "Mum theres something sticking through the rear wheel arch" Mum "oh !£"$$"%" ;D
