Good mornin!
I have just bought a MX5 (project thread to follow once ive taken some decent photos!) and it is has got a bit of surface rust on the rear arches. After some vigours poking (fnar fnar) it feels solid so instead of welding fresh metal in I am going to try a rust remover/convertor on it and see how it goes.
I have used hammerite's rust convertor before but can anyone recommend a better one?
thanks
Danny

Phosphoric acid. And I think that's what pretty much any rust remover is based on. Some have more, same have less percentage of acid. I myself am using 'Pelox RE' (don't know if you can get it in the UK?) which contains 25% phosphoric acid. Light surface rust (on exposed metal after paint stripping p.e.) is gone in seconds... But depending on how deep the rust has bitten, it's sometimes better to replace the metal with fresh one. Even if it isn't rusted through. No point in keeping paper thin metal, IMO...

I have no idea how it works as a cost comparison, but as an 'available from every DIY store and Halfords outside of working hours' option, Kurust does work very well. And it's a lovely colour ;D

I've just been using Hydrate 80 from Bilt Hamber again, never let me down. Their range covers pretty much all bases.

jenolite has worked fairly well for me as opposed to "not at all" which is how I find most others...
Aim to get all the rust out by wire brush rather than rely on brush on treatments
