It's finaly happend. I'm not sure if it's because I've passed my thirtieth birthday (in fact I'm 31 towards the end of the month) or because I've got a yound family or (more likely) because petrol is now beyond legal extortion but I have gone and bought myself my first ever Diesel car!
To be fair it's a '95 Peugoet 405 GTX Turbo Diesel and it's a bloody good car. Everything works (except the flat air-con) and it came with 3/4 tank of diesel. Cost me £400 which has to be the biggest bargain of my car buying life. But it's still a sensible oil burner and the big burning question is, will this big '90's wallowy french repmobile/taxi ever be retro?
These cars have quite a following with there own forum (aimed more at the mi16 versions) and everything but I can't help thinking these people are a bit disilousioned. The cars a cheap as chips so you get lots for your money but even with the Mi16 lump it's just a thin metaled front wheel drive motorway muncher with nothing particularly clever about it. So what do you guys reckon?
Whatever your leanings, I'll just have to make sure I give the tarmac plenty of abuse when I finish my 2.9ltr 24 valve PETROL V6 Cortina!
Smiler.

smiler mate,'fraid the answer here is not at the mo' But,in the future who knows? The cortina wouldn't have been classed as retro a while ago,it was just a "shed" look now though. ;D'spose we're back to that old chesnut. What makes a car a Classic/Retro? By definition one day ,sure it'll be retro.Just not sure it will ever be classed as a classic

Well i think they're cool, and very underrated!! But then i would, as i have one!! Mine's an uber-rare homologation special, the Mi16x4. I don't see why not, if a 205 GTi is Retro, so are these!!

Hmm,just don't think a '95 Peugeot 405 oil burner could be classed as retro Bit like my post in the Vitara thread-Would you class a '95 Vectra as retro?

Hmm, see you're point!! But, as someone said in the 205 thread, it doesn't matter when it was made up to, it was when it was first designed/made?? Which in a 405's case was '88 IIRC, so would also imply that power unit doesn't matter either??

When a certain style of vehicle becomes out of date, you know how you can tell a '70's car from a '60s', '80's or whatever.... that in my mind goes a long way to determining retro-ness.
Like the Cortina example.... they just don't make em like that anymore, so it's a definite retro candidate. I reckon car design hasn't progressed a lot since the early 90's, so we'll be seeing fewer "proper" retro cars.

Maybe it has more to do with your age than the age of the car? I cant, hand on heart, consider anything that went into producton after 1980 as particulary Retro, my era would be the 60s and 70s. One thing i will say, and ive said it before, much "retroness" is about a way of thinking and style that, probably sets it apart from other types of mods. In the future an awful lot more oil burners, curse word loads were sold in the 90s and still are, are going to fall into an age group where they will be seen as very retro by all. There isnt too much going on on the diesel front here TBH, perhaps you will set the ball rolling and create a Retro style as well as showing everybody how to wring those extra horses out of an old smoker. There is a VW Golf 1.9TDI (110bhp) with its own site ( Portugese) thats pushing out in excess of 250BHP. Sure the mods cost money and trial and error but it shows you what you can achieve. Good luck!

I really like 405's and though they're a bit large for me to warrant one at the moment If I ever need a large car like that they'll certainly be high on my list. As robmajorca said I think retro has a lot to do with your age. I'm only the tender age of 19 so anything up until the very early 90's can be retro in my eyes.

IMO not retro, but (in it's favour) the design is showing it's age a bit. I think that there's always space on this forum to discuss near-retro bargain buys....and this definitely counts in that department. Don't expect me to get too excited though or I'll start telling you all about my daily-drive Tourneo and nobody wants that! ;D

interesting debate,in the same way of the scorpio one the other day. dazmax,i wouldn't say a vitara is retro either- I think its a good to car to juice, and useful for people to see a juiced car build up thread, but then i wouldn't say either of my scorpio are either, although they do have more, erm, interesting, erm, exploratory styling than the vitara or 405.

Not very retro.
But there's nothing to stop you giving it 'the treatment'.
Some serious height reduction and some choice rollerskate wheels as well as trim reduction and careful 'accessorising' could make it a v.cool steed.

"ever" - yes "now" - no But as the weasel avec la pog said there is no reason not to give it the treatment .. obviously finish your Cortina first

Oh no, not a chance. If I mess with this car the wife will kill me! This is her car. It may be my name in the log book and she might not even have a provisional licence but she coughed up the cash to make sure it was hers so that I can't mess with it!
To be honest, I don't consider it to be retro. But I reckon in a few more years it will start to be picked up on more for the 'retro treatment'. As for a '95 Vectra, no way. There just chav boxes. There going to be about as retro as mk4 Escorts! Mk3 Escorts have retro appeal as they made a big impact but the mk4 was a cost cutting exercise which just happend to lend itself rather well to the bodykit brigade.
As for how to define retro (don't you just love these debates) as mentioned, age of the individual does play a big part in it. For me it's 60's to early 80's. I appreciate that the younger generation see younger cars as being retro but I beleive that the mid 80's deffinately saw big changes in car design evoloution. Not only that, to a 20year old, ten years ago ('96) was half there life ago. To me it was still a third of my life but just doesn't feel it so the cars feel newer. In fact I keep forgetting that this pug of mine (sorry, the wifes) is over a decade old!
Enough of this dribble, thanks for the replies. I'll take a look at that website too.
Regards, Smiler.

I think Mk4 Escrotes have a certain retro ness(see below for an example). As with all cars though it depends on how it has been modified. However as I mentioned earlier I'm only a Bairn.

Retro or not again, always a funny question, i have given up completly using 'classic' now unless its to insurance or a dude not mad into any scene! 405 and 6 i always thought of as just motorways smokers, yet the Taxi films as comical and tongue in cheek as they are really makes me want one! Anything can be given the treatment if the want is there. I'm constantly amazed by the sheer variety of cars people enthuse about, good that they are all appreciated by someone. theres a point for me where like whoever it was (snoozineuro?) on the 205 thread, its when you start noticing them in car parks etc they become retro to you. it would take an interesting one for me to notice at the mo. Similarly i notice and lust after most sweet sierras on the road, most are general smokers with old blokes in , but i bet Mk1's are often owned by entusuiasts or chucked these days making them defo retro.
