	Was thinking of dropping a late model 1600 (16 valver) and 'box/transfer box from a Vitara into my old Series 3 Land-Rover, but know nothing much about these beasties other than: -the right fuel (not diseasel) -about the right power (had 200+ bhp last time, fun but silly) -about the right size and weight (not mahoosive like land-rover gear) -5-Speed with part time 4WD, low box, and about the right gearing for a Series (proper 4WD, none of this permanent 4WD malarky) -Do they fall to bits? -Do they wear out? -How much of a pain are all the security features on them? (immobilisers, transponders etc - integrated with body computers?) -If I buy a Vitara, are body parts/axles etc worth anything? 	I've got a M reg Vitara. Quite nice compared to my previous Land Rovers but nothing like the torque. Also despite the power seems slower than a 2.25 diesel ! Gearbox a fraction of the LR weight. Not sure how much power they can handle but mine is already weak on 1st & 2nd at under 80,000 miles - got a spare box ready to swop ! What about a Frontera gearbox with a Vauxhall "Red top" ? 	Hmmm, like this Honzuki Shitara beastie? retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=91071&page=10 Part time 4x4 - check! C20XE and C20LET are much the stablemates of the Rover T16 I pulled out - bit too juicy for the Series 3 if anything. Saying that, the 2.2 ECOTECs seem to have better fuel economy figures than the old 8 valver jobbies though, and go for peanuts as breakers 2nd hand. What other Vaux ECOTEC engines fit the same 'box?

	I 'think' all the ecotecs fit the frontera sport box, the difficulty IME is the clutch plate as the input shaft is bigger and coarser splined than all of the VX variants I tried. ATM mine has a Frontera sport friction plate which is smaller in diameter than the pressure plate, not ideal but it'll do for the moment. If it gives issues in the future I'll start looking through the Isuzu parts catalogue as the box is a Japanese product with a GM bellhousing pattern. All of the later Ecotec motors have the transponder immobiliser on them, canbus ones potentially having the body module issues. From experience the 16v Vitara lump from the earlier (pre facelift) Vitaras isn't too bad to wire up and the wiring diagrams are available online. Facelift ones are more likely to have transponder but no body module so providing you get the key with it shouldn't be any more difficult. What about the 1.7 Isuzu TD motor, as fitted to Astras and Cavaliers, on a Frontera sport box? They're reputed to be good for 120-130bhp with a few mods, run on veg and should be reasonably economical. *edit to add - What about the V6 out of the Grand Vitara?

	for clutches, download the Quinton Hazel catalogue. This will tell you the spline count and diameter of the input shaft, and the clutch diameter for each car After you've found out what size you need,and what spline count you need, it's just a case of flicking through it, until you find a car with the specs that you need ie: to fit my LDV gearbox, upto a citroen engine, I could have used a ford galaxy friction plate.

	Cheers lads, that QH catalogue is a useful tool! V6 - too juicy for a Series, really doesn't warrant the power and I'll just blow diffs if I put it in there. (can't help myself LOL) 1.7 TD looks like the 1.9 TD Pug lumps or 200/300TDis - not many about that aren't trashed already...

	the 1.9Td pug lumps (XUD9) are pretty much indestructable, and give plenty of grunt with economy too! I'd say go that route - plenty of other people have done it too, which means you won't have to figure things out yourself

	Vitara engine will be rubbish in a landy, even in a 1 ton Vitara they struggle at 80mph and drink like a fish at anything over 60mph on the motorway, they also need a fair bit of revving to get them to go and the extra weight of the landy and its axles will seriously stress an already not great gearbox. my 16v Vit was worse on fuel on the motorway than our 3 litre turbo diesel auto Surf at any speed. V6 vitara only has 25bhp more than the 16v and is even more thirsty.
